I would love to put that engine into my fox!! i know that there are "other" alternatives- stroke, big block, etc etc . But just something about putting the new 5.0 into a FOX seems so right!!!

It's pretty sad that my healthy cammed stroker puts down less than that and it's temperamental as hell on the street, while this engine purrs like a kitten and gets better mpg than most cars i've driven.

Get back with me in about 5 years, and i WILL be swapping one of these into my coupe.

At the pace of technology right now, I'd be willing to bet Ford will have made this engine obsolete in 5 years. Have you seen that they no longer offer the 3-valve as a crate engine?

Now you're talking crazy. As badass as this car is, i'd still rather have a built coupe. In a perfect world though i'd still have one for a DD.

I was going disagree with you because this show promise of being a good motor. But so was the 4v 4.6, and the 3v 4.6. You are probably right.

I really hope Ford dumps the Shelby name and goes back to just an SVT Cobra. I mean how much more was an 03 Cobra compared to an 03 GT like about 10k. Now the Shelby is double that of a GT if not more. This new 5.0 has me all pumped up!! Im seeing an aluminum block SVT Cobra in the future, MAN, ill be all over that!!!

Oh, its going to be a great motor... But in 5 years there will be a better one, or at least a better version of this one. Gone are the days of going for years without mechanical changes like our 87-93 5.0.

while that is impressive and all, i bet your built pushrod coupe is still faster. Not much less power im sure quite a bit lighter. how heavy are the 2011 mustangs?

I imagine that it'll stick around longer than that. Remember, even though the 3-valve head configuration was only around for 5-years, the Romeo/Windsor Modular engines themselves have been around for the past 19-years.

I'm sure they'll see a few minor improvements in the next few years, but I don't imagine it'll be anything drastic like a complete engine redesign.

Maybe the '87-'93 Mustang specific engine has remained virtually the same throughout their run (even if the engine configuration itself was build through trial and error using a mix and match of parts from several different ford engines of the past), but the 5.0L itself has been no less workded over thoughout the years. It's gone though about 10-different blocks, 20-different sets of heads, 30 different intakes and a very rocky transition from carb and EFI over it near 40-year production run.

Perhaps. But we're not talking about comparing the cars to one and other, but the engines themselves. No 302 built to date...with stock parts or otherwise has been able to knock out these kinds of power levels, with such efficiency and street friendly manners. The new 5.0L Coyote is seeing over 110% efficiency from 4,000RPM and beyond. That's unheard of for any Ford pushrod, or even previous modular engine before it. This is exotic race engine territory here folks. Anyone who isn't completely impressed by this engine, is quite frankly blinded by sheer ignorance.

I dont know about the engine being maxed out...maybe in stock form you may not pick up much just flashing the computer, but throw some rowdy cams in it, port the heads and build a short runner sheet metal intake on and see what happens. If the stock bottom end can handle revs then it'll respond well.

And to answer your question, the HP reading would be higher because the transmission is multiplying the numbers

Good catch on the gearing thing. But they wouldn't necessarily be higher. I dyno tune Harleys all the time which also have a 1:1 5th gear. They tell us to run in 4th. If you do a power run in 5th (1:1) it usually makes identical hp and a couple more ft lbs compared to the lower geared 4th.

Yea, I believe this platform will be around for a while, but I'd be willing to bet that this NA, traditionally-injected engine won't be around for too long. They intentionally designed this engine with provisions for design changes down the road, so I would be surprised if this Coyote lasts 5 years without some sort of a change. I mean, words like "boost" and "direct injection" have been tossed around a LOT in the interviews with the engineers behind the Coyote.

there comes a time in a mans life when fast doesnt really matter anymore, it kinda like when you date a girl with D cups for a year or two, big kazongas don't matter much anymore after that because you've had em and you know the problems with em.

I find my stock 92' mustang more enjoyable than the hopped up one. Getting a new 11 mustang with a tune would make driving easy turn the key and go. Dont have to stare at the water temp, look at oil pressure, carry extra belts and tools. Down side would be I couldn't attract as many 15-18yr old boys oggiling over my car and asking questions that i have no answer to.

I think ford did it right everyone beats up on a company that comes out with something new, then a year later everyone owns one.

ill advised

And you were doing so well, Gearbanger. lol

I tend to agree with S&B. My '90 is a blast to drive for a day or two and then I'm ready to get back into my '92. It's balls slow compared to the '90 but it's quieter, rides much smoother, it's low-key, and it doesn't feel like I'm sitting in an oven after an hour. For me speed and power definitley still matters but it's no longer my main focus when judging a car. Nowadays I still want the feeling of a strong (v8) but I also want the refinement that comes with a newer car. The new Mustang very much delivers on both. I don't look at it as a threat to Fox body Mustangs (as some of you seem to be taking it). I see it as a threat to the real "enemy": the Camaro.
