275/40/17 ok on 10.5" deep dish bullits?

my 315/35/17 Sumitomo HTR-Z's are bald in the middle after 12,000 miles and was never really impressed with how they handle the rain so I was looking for different tires for my 10.5" deep dish bullits (rear). Seems like there really aren't any options besides what I have ($100) and the $300 each Goodyear F1 GS-D3. So I started thinking about 275/40/17's, there are lots of options there, but would they look bad on the big rims? I drive about 15,000 miles per year on my summer tires, so $300 each doesn't seem reasonable unless they would last a lot longer than my htr-z's. These 4.10 gears are hard on tires

dont go that narrow

a lot of people run 275s as a normal size on 9" rims...they'll look too tiny.
you got the 10.5" rims. stay wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide. go as wide as you can afford

Hey Man Both sets of My 315/35/17's Sumitomas did the exact same thing!!! I Feel you pain and I am also debating on getting another set of tires 285/40/17 Not 275 It does bump your speedometer 1 percent but that is 1 mile and hour in 100 miles an hour not a noticable difference. I think I am going to get the BFG KDW-S And if you have 9 inch rims up front on your car with 245/45/17's it looks exactly like that Flush with the Rim!

I have 275's on my 9" rim. I never did like the Sumitomo either. Mine wore out VERY quickly on both my Cougar and my Stang. I would try a different brand.

Wayyyyy too small of a tire. Good for a 9" rim but definately not a 10.5" one.

I have tried kdw-s. I used those up fast and they were a soft unresponsive ride. But considering the tire type, I guess they were good.

Me personally, I wouldnt put a 275, however, Ive heard of people using a 285 Khumo tire that rode well and wasnt TOO terribly thin.

Tires that wear in the middle like that is often a sign of too much air pressure.

+1 to the too much air... i run 35 front 34 rear on my stang w/ stock size tires... you gotta think that your going to a bigger tire so more contact area so you need LESS pressure, youd probably be good around 33-32

+2 on too much air I would run around 30-32 psi in my tires

please dont get 275's for a 10.5" rim get 295's at the least and I would run 315s. The reason your getting wider rims is to fit wider tires. If you dont want to spend the loot and are gonna run 275s just buy a 9" rim.

After the first set were warn in the middle, I started running 27psi in the rear, still got the same thing.

All right 315's are on order. Decided to stick with the htrz's since the fronts are almost new. Don't want to mix it up too much. I'll try something different next summer when they are all bald again

I have different fronts and rears and it looks kinda goofy but didnt have that much money at the time. Bought some used tires from ebay ...they worked out fine

I have 295 on my 10" deep dish bullitts and I think that even they are borderline. I wouldnt go any smaller, and you are talking about an even wider rim.

Id say definitly try to get 315s on that wide of rim EXPENSIVE THOUGH

Too all the guys about the Air pressure being too high! I ran 33psi in the first set and 30 in this second set same result it's the tire I think it's sidewalls are too weak! This isn't my first bar-B-Q.

I was thinking just the opposite on the tire pressure. With the larger tires and different load rating, wouldn't you need more air to compensate for the difference in design? I'm only referring to street tires of course. I took this from from discounttiredirect.com and have seen similar tips from tire manufacturers. Disregard the Honda ref.
Another valuable resource is the Tire Load/Inflation Tables. Your nearby tire dealer should have a copy. Not only will this document tell you the correct tire pressure for stock sizes, but it will provide the information on optional plus sizes as well. A good example would be the findings on a Honda Civic with the stock size 185/65R-14; recommended air pressure is 28 psi. Plus one size is 195/55R-15 with a recommended air pressure of 32 psi. Plus two size is 205/45R-16 with a recommended air pressure of 36 psi. Note how the air pressure increases with plus sizing to meet the load carrying capacity for the car.
