Kinda long - sorry.
For my warmed up 351, I would like to replace my
AOD with a later 4R70W, but so far can't find a
28 oz flexplate for an /E or 4R.
Found out there are basically 2 size lockup converters.
The larger 12" (which was used with 302's) is only
good to about 5400 rpm before it starts ballooning,
but with it's larger lockup clutch has more torque
capacity in lockup. (The smaller 11" which is good to
about 6500 rpm was used only with mod motors and
of course there's no oem flexplate for any of the Windsor
motors that has the smaller bolt circle pattern for the 11".)
My 351 is built mild for mid range torque w/a heavy
car, and 5400 is plenty for my combo, plus I'd be better
off with the heavier duty lockup clutch.
Although there are oem flexplates for 302 Windsors with the
larger 12" converter, I haven't been able to find any oem
application that used the 351 (28 oz flexplate) with an /E or 4R.
With my good low & mid range torque, one of those oem 12"
converters would give me plenty stall (between 2500 & 3000
using the K factor calculation) and would let me save several
hundred bucks for an aftermarket converter which would then
put the 4R swap within affordability range.
If there aren't any aftermarket 28oz flexplates available for the
/E - 4R trans, has anyone tried swapping balance weights?
Then an oem 302 /E flexplate could be used if the weights could
successfully be swapped.
