28 spline vs 31 spline axles

I've always wanted to have an idea of how much more torque/power 31 spline axles handle vs 28 spline.

Can anyone answer?

Reason i'm asking is I've noticed that the Powertrax NoSlip is the same part number for an 8" as it is for a 28 Spline 9".
I was thinking, that until I got myself a 9" all worked out, I could pop in the Powertrax into my 8" for the time being so I lose the embarrassing 1 tire fire and then when the time came I could just reuse it in the 9". However I'd be stuck with using 28 spline axles.

If i'm going to have a severe power handling problem with a 9" with 28 spline axles, then I would just not bother with the above idea.

Are you looking at the lock rite or the no slip? According to the powertrax website, the lock rite 1810 can be used for both 8" and 9" with 28 splines, and a 9" with 31 splines. I dont know how this can work, but i trusted them tonight when i got a new unit off eBay for $185 shipped. Im getting a 9" housing this weekend, so ill use it in a 9", or in my spare 8" and throw in some 4.11s. It looks like i would need an open case to use this product.

I see its for the no slip now.

since the 31 spline axles are larger than most 28 spline axles, there are some 28 spline axles that are the same size as the 31's, the 31's will handle more power, stock for stock about 20% more power. depending on how much power you are making, you likely wont over stress the 28 spline axles anytime soon, especially since you have them in an 8" rear.
