285/40/17 tire fitment

i need some rear tires bad and i managed to score a pair of barely used 285/40/17's for free. has anyone run this size before and how well do they fit a fox? i have 275/40/17's now on a 17x10 rim with 6.5 backspacing. quarter lips are already rolled and i have no quads. thanks!

But I guess it depends on how tight it is under your car right now.

Thanks Lars, that's the info I needed. The 275s are pretty tight but I think they'll fit, if not, I'll make them fit. Where'd you get that info?

Although not the same animal, I run 285/35/18s. Probably a very close match to your 285/40/17s, and they fit fine. I have only had rub one two occassions, both of which were extremes. One the car was on a very steep grassy hill and as I came down on an angle one tire just rubbed inside. The second time was during a very fast turn I heard what I thought was rear tire rub.
