Hi, I give thanks in advance to anyone who lends help.....Im a new ford guy... always had gm stuff in the past. I have a 68 mustang with a solid but stock 289. I would like to install a bigger cam for some improved performance, but mostly for the lumpy big cam sound... any suggestions for a cam without any other head mods?....Engine is a solid 289 with a edelbrock performer intake with a edelbrock 600 cfm carb. auto trans (c4) with stock converter... 373 rear gears (appox). any thoughts?... Thanks!

forgive me I'm a newb, but from what I have heard, most manufacturers sell kits, so since you already have Edelbrock carb and intake why not continue down that road, at least it will ensure all is compatible, so how about their

Performer Plus off-idle to 5500 rpm Part # 2122 or the Performer RPM from 1500 to 6500 rpm Part # 7122

Just trying to help, if these will not work, then can someone learn us why it would not work or be a good idea?

A lumpy big cam sound is cool, but you will also want the performance from it, won't you? A 3.73 is a good gear for a decent cam, I think you could use a performer RPM range cam (.496/.520) with those gears, and really enjoy it! That will require an adjustable valve train, and custom push rods though. But if you only want noise, and not a quick car, I've heard the "thumper" line of cams are good for that...

A guy near here took his "solid" 67 289 2V down, installed the Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and 600 cfm carb, stock distributor recurved to BOSS 302 specs, iron 67 heads port-matched and cleared of smog bumps for decent breathing, and a C9OZ-6250-C hydraulic version of the 289HP cam. When assembled, it turned 323 hp on the dyno. Pretty good numbers for a low-buck build, especially since he did the heads himself. More info on that here:

The Performer RPM cam has a real nice lope to its idle. I would do as woodsnake suggests and use that cam. I'm happy w/ mine. I wish I had 373s all i got is 3:1s Oh BTW I would get a performer RPM intake to better match the cam too. Something to think about down the road.
