289 swapping manifolds to headers - new H pipe?

Hi all- I'm swapping my 289 out, changing over to HiPo headers from stock manifolds and from single to dual exhaust.

The planets haven't aligned and the engine swap is going to happen BEFORE the exhaust work. Can the headers be swapped out and hooked up to the EXISTING y-pipe for a week until the rest of the dual exhaust set-up, incluiding correct H-pipe, can go on or won't they fit? It's dones't need to pass judging, just function for a week. Any experience out there with this-thanks--Steph

I wouldnt think the new header collectors would line up with the old y pipe. Just drive it around with no exhaust, but remember to take some ear plugs and stay away from the police, they tend to frown on that.

I have always heard that running an engine with straight headers is a bad idea (something about "floating pistons" or other). Does anyone know if this is true? I always start her up for a bit whenever the exhaust gets unhooked, just becuase I like to scare the neighbors :).

Running open headers leans it out. Running without any exhaust manifolds, headers, etc will burn the valves. I can't see the sense in hooking the exhaust up for a week, it'll cost you. Just wait for the headers till the new engine's in.
