Buddy of mine has a 1965 Mustang in the paint and body shop at the moment. His stock 289 engine and C4 trans is out of the car. He's planning on having both rebuilt and thrown back in. Told him why you don't just upgrade to a roller 302 engine. Well now he's thinking about it and weighing the cost. He's on a tight budget and really not sure what it takes to upgrade to a 302. He just wants a nice driver to cruise around with his family from time to time.

For any of you fellas who have experience in this, can he just look for a 302 short block and use everything else off his 289? I know he would like a cam swap just for the lope sound if possible. And would it bolt up without any issues to his stock C4 trans? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Convert the 289 to roller and weigh the cost of stroking it to whatever displacement floats his boat.

If you're getting the block machined for a rebuild or stroker then it's cheap and easy to have them drill and tap for this:

LMR, Amazon, Summit, ETC....

Or you can go with something like this:

That doesn't require additional machine work.
