2nd gear grind (t45)

Well, a lot of times second gear grinds when i put it into it WITH the clutch all the way in. This happens especially bad when i'm going at a pretty good speed in first and shift to second.

Anyone know why this is or any way to fix it?

by any chance does it go away when the car gets warmer?

Yeah, it goes almost completely away when its warmer. Still does some small grinds occasionally on hard shifts when its warm.

i had this problem in my old tranny, it would do that when the car was cold, but st it got up to temp it went away. I never figured out how to fix it b4 i bew the shift fork and just replaced it with a tremec

i go to UTI and am in a transmission class justt got done wit tare down and put back, if it is grinding in 2 you might have a bad syncronizer (this slows down your counter shaft so it can lock on to 2nd) or your pressure plate assemblie is bad(pressure plate, diafram, or clutch)

yea i priced my t-45 synchros on my 97 cobra and it was 3-400 with labor

Have you changed your fluid lately? If so chances are you probably overfilled it and it will cause a second gear grind bad. Alot of people will tell you as soon as it comes out the fill hole close it off and its good to go but thats more qts then it actually calls for. If you havent changed it maybe you should but i tried all the expensive brands and it helped but kept doing it. So I contacted tremec and they told me not to use synthetic in the t-45 so i just bought the cheap stuff from walmart and i havent had a second gear grind since. Another thing do you have a steeda tri ax? Ive read alot of people have the 2nd gear grind with them and switched to something like the pro 5.0 and it went away. Hope this helps,

Actually the blocking rings are worn out and the grinding you hear is the teeth on the syncronizer.

My 98 did that in 2nd and sometimes 3rd. I was told it was due to bent forks.

They are cast aluminum and dont bend they break, which is why my tranny is in pieces on my bench.

www.hanlonmotorsports.com has 3 different rebuild kits from the basic syncro overhaul to the full on bearings and everything kit if anyone needs to know where to get the parts. There not that expensive to rebuild if you can do it yourself or know someone who can. At the very least the syncro only kit is 179.99

One thing I did try on mine was to drain the synthetic I was using and refilled it with type-F. Type-F isnt as slick as dextron or synthetics and it seemed to help the friction material grab the cones a little bit better. It eliminated the cold grind for me.

Yeah I did fill it recently...over the summer...right when I got the car.

The problem with that is I dont know if it was because I overfilled or if it did it with the previous owner too

Didn't the t-45's come with synthetic from the factory?? That's what the manual said for mine. I definitely need synchros!!!

I broke a shift fork. thats why my tranny done blowed up, but does anyone know how long you can go with this syncro grind b4 you have to replace the tranny or rebuild it?

And would could read that friggin 3650 post at this point anyway? I mean, how many posts are in there now, almost 1500?!?! Cliff notes - There is a Ford TSB for the Tremec 3650. Done.

the tsb doesnt apply to the t45 tho...which have the same exact problem. And honnestly, my 3550 has done it once...i havent been able to do it again, but one morning leaving for school i shifter at about 3k rpms and it grinded 2nd. Tremec needs to take responsibility for their crap
