2nd gear problem

I did some searching on the site but here is my situation.

second gear at low rpms is fine. a little higher and it grinds and doesnt go in.
I know the clutch needs to be replaced, and I havent tried the adjustment thing with the clutch pedal. car has 84k on it, what things can I do myself before I have a shop figure out what is going on with it?

It sounds to me like the syncro is going in your second gear. I'm not sure there is much you can do. Any chance you have ever changed the tranny oil?

I don't know the tranny oil history on the car. how big of a job is fixing the syncros?

it involves taking the tranny apart. never done it myself. Youmay need special tools top get the gears off the shafts i'm not sure.

I wouldnt be doin somethin like that. what would a shop charge for that? and is there anything I should have them rebuild while they are doing that so the tranny will last longer?

You dont need any special tools to get the gears off the main shaft. Buy the T5 rebuild video from www.hanlonmotorsports.com and you'll see that its a pretty simple job.

Stop grinding the gear til you fix it. Each time you grind, the wear on 2nd gear increases and the price of the repair goes up

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ also has a video on how to rebuild your T5 or Tremec. It costs about $20, and is worth every penny of it.

I did a Tremec 3550 rebuild, and it wasn't that difficult. The video was an immense help, and I would recommend viewing it. At $20, it will give you an opportunity to look and decide for yourself if you think that it is something you want to try to do.

well there you go i think i'm going to get that video aswell. I have 3 t-5's laying around that need repairs. I guess i could make some cash off them if i rebuilt them.

man tranny's are easy to rebuild, simple hand tools and a small piece of rope for the cluster gear... the only special tool is a dummy shaft for the cluster gear so you dont loose the bearings. just make sure you keep the washers in the same way and the same spots

You will need to have the gears pressed off of the mainshaft if you plan on replacing all of the synchro's and bearings included in the rebuild. It is not a difficult job, I just did one using the borg warner t-5 manual. The key is to be patient, take your time, and keep everything clean and organized.

i'm putting the wraps on one right now.

Simple tools? yes and no.

to do it right you'll need some v blocks and a dial indicator to check for mainshaft warping

you'll need a special set of snap ring pliers (you'll see them in the video, they 're not your normal pair...I found them at mcfadden dales)

You'll need some punches

and You may likely need the press. FYI, I was able to get every single bearing and gear off with a simple set of tire irons or screw drivers except the bearing on the cluster shaft. That one would just not come off. Be prepared to need a press, or have to run one of the shafts down to a shop.

ALso, don't expect to get away with a simple rebuild kit, as it's almost expected to need a second gear, a 3-4 shift fork, the rebuild kit etc etc. Mine needed about $450 worth of gears and parts and the rebuild kit to get her going. IF your mainshaft is warped, expect more, a lot more.

Not trying to scare you away, just be prepared or you'll have a basket of worthless parts laying in your garage.
