3.55 or heads?

Hey people, i need your advice. What should i get? Should i get gt40 heads from the junk yard for $75, which i would have to clean up, do a 3 angle valve job, buy springs, pushrods, etc. or should i get 3.55 from roush for $87.

Its a gift from my brother, but hes needs to save up. so i dont want him spending too much and i dont wanna spend too much. the heads will consume so much more money. to clean em up and the the valve job is 75 bucks a piece, so its a total of $150 to do that. then the springs, and possibly lifters and pushrods and so forth.

Basically, which will give me a better 1/4 mile time for my $? i was leaning more towards the gears. alot less of a hassle.

so what help do you need? you answered your own ? If you have stock gears then 3:55's will help and be good on the street. it's obvious gt40 heads are better than stocks E7's but for you it comes down to $$ and the cheaper of the 2 is gears, which your brother can afford question answered.

did you try bumping up your timing....

Like I said and like you stated your bro needs to save up cash,so which means he either has bills of his own to pay or doesn't have xtra cash hanging around.If I had someone willing to do something nice I wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth and make your brother come up with more $$ than needed. gears are short money and will gain you better 60ft and 1/4 miles times. 3:55's on a stock and even a mild cam are a good match and the way I would go. junkyard GT40's also are a nice gain but can be had later and should come from your own buck and the new heads will be happier with the gears vs stockers. what you got anyways 3:08, 2:73, or 3:27's ?

also please don't turn this into one of those posts where you get advise and go back and forth "yeah but" over and over, like you just did. one sentance he needs to save up, I don't want to spend to much, the heads will cost to much, then we can afford either one . get gears.

I did heads before gears. If I had it to do over again, gears would be the very first mod to my car.

Do the gears now. You will not regret it.

Apples to oranges. Gears the best mod if thats all u can afford for a while, heads will benefit most in the long run.

looks pretty good to me! and right now i have 2.73's and burns all of 1st gear and some of second (running rich). Cant imagine how it would be ith 3.55's and running good. gets me all tingly and exited inside

You can drop your timing to about 12 and throw some 110 in there. Should be cheaper then gears and should net you about 21.9684 horsepowers more.

Used gears? D'oh!

I'd gamble my hard earned moneys on a lot of things, but junkyard drivetrain parts aren't one of those things.

Keep in mind the gear swap isn't going to be a smash-and-grab spare time operation. Count on 100-150$ in rebuild costs alone, if you do it yourself. Having a shop do it will be MUCH more.

yeah, i know its a junkyard part, but from the looks of it, its in pretty damn
good shape. And to be honest, the cobra intake i have, its a junkyard part. my RR also junkyard part. The heads i was gona get, Also junkyard part. Thats how i roll. cheap easy power. why go with extreme priced parts from a catalog, when you can buy is for the fraction of the price and get the same out of it

Maybe because you'll always end up with junk and get scrwed at some point? A used intake is a little different then a used set of gears. Intake is not a moving part, gears are. Stick with the 12 degrees and 110 you'll be all set.

this thread still going. If you want the used gears just get them. look them over real good and put them in. If you are getting the ebay ones from the link you posted he has 100% positive feedback and sells all rearend gears so it's probally a safe bet but still a chance. I wouldn't put used gears in but you feel okay with it, it's your car go for it. guys on here do junkyard builds all the time, 5-lug conversions,etc. post the results after the install.

3.55s are way too much gear for a street car. You would actually go faster by running a higher gear like a 2.23 or something so you only have to shift once in the 1/4 mile. At least that's what my friends told me.
