A friend of mine has a 99 GT and is thinking about getting a 3:73 gear. (It's a 5-speed) What are the advantages and disadvantages of having one? What will he top out at? How much of a change will it be? Will his car be a little slower from a 50 roll? Is it loud when your driving on the highway? Does it put a lot of wear and tear on the transmission?

the rpm's will go up somewhat, it'll really wake the car up and the acceleration will be quicker

And since its a 5 speed you can use a speedcal to correct your speedo.

Will his MPH increase in the quarter, or will it stay the same with a better 60'?

His time in the quarter will be a little less, assuming he can drive it worth a crap.

Pass on to your friend that if he's planning on staying naturally aspirated that he may want to consider going with 4.10's.

OK so HoustonGT said 2 more posts I will just say this. Unless your friend does 90MPH long hauls on the freeway he should get 4.10's. And if he does drive that way tell him to slow down and get 4.10's. With 4.10's 70 MPH is about 2500 RPM. With our OHC higher reving motors the more gear helps alot. In the city MPG can actually increase while highway maybe looses 1 MPG.

Alright, so assuming he gets the 4:10's what will his car top out at? Also, what kind of MPH should he expect in the quarter with a stock GT with just a 4:10 gear? Would his MPH in the quarter be faster without the gear? (just wondering) Also, how loud are they? He does a lot of highway driving by the way. (Around 80mph or so)

Yeah.. you're going to have to search the forums to find those numbers.

Just tell him to get the gears and he'll find all that out for himself.

Are you asking how loud do the gears get or the exhaust cause if done correctly the gears are quiet. The exhaust wont change except on how loud it gets fast do to the gearing and getting high in the rpms fast.

I'm asking how loud the gear will be. Everyone I know who has gotten a gear, says it has been loud. I used to have one on my old car and it was kind of annoying. It feels good to drive and not hear that ringing anymore.

With 4.10's top of 4th gear will be around 110 MPH. You wont go faster than that with a N/A 4.6L. If theres plans for a supercharger than 3.73's would probly be better. You can play around with this speed/rpm/gear calculator. http://tchracing.com/tech/gearcalc.php

Have yer buddy just drive around at say 2500-2700 RPM and see if he can live with the exhaust tone.

Normally, I would say to search, but I've noticed the search function here is lacking. I can search for threads using the exact words and they don't return anything lately.

its all on the application you want

3.73's for FI (KB) setup or to much highway driving

4.10's for N/A or FI (centri) and not too much highway driving
