A friend of mine has a 99 GT and is thinking about getting a 3:73 gear. (It's a 5-speed) What are the advantages and disadvantages of having one? What will he top out at? How much of a change will it be? Will his car be a little slower from a 50 roll? Is it loud when your driving on the highway? Does it put a lot of wear and tear on the transmission?

His time in the quarter will be a little less, assuming he can drive it worth a crap.

Pass on to your friend that if he's planning on staying naturally aspirated that he may want to consider going with 4.10's.

OK so HoustonGT said 2 more posts I will just say this. Unless your friend does 90MPH long hauls on the freeway he should get 4.10's. And if he does drive that way tell him to slow down and get 4.10's. With 4.10's 70 MPH is about 2500 RPM. With our OHC higher reving motors the more gear helps alot. In the city MPG can actually increase while highway maybe looses 1 MPG.

Alright, so assuming he gets the 4:10's what will his car top out at? Also, what kind of MPH should he expect in the quarter with a stock GT with just a 4:10 gear? Would his MPH in the quarter be faster without the gear? (just wondering) Also, how loud are they? He does a lot of highway driving by the way. (Around 80mph or so)

I'm asking how loud the gear will be. Everyone I know who has gotten a gear, says it has been loud. I used to have one on my old car and it was kind of annoying. It feels good to drive and not hear that ringing anymore. :D
