This past weekend i got my 3.73 gears and traction lock installed... and the results...feels like i gained .5 sec on my quarter... with two wheels spinning, the car just feels like all the power is getting to the wheels... Tonight i test drove it for the first time and really pushing it... wow this mod is awesome!!! I would recommend it!!

I'm gonna do the gears and a rebuild of the rear end to my car soon. Did you notice a big drop in highway mpg? Cause I drive a lot of hwy and I cant afford to lose all that money to gas. If its like 1-3 like everyone says, then I can live with that. thx

how expensive was the install on the gears and T-lock, Im looking to do the same hopefully this summer, and I know rear-end work is spendy. I wana know how much Im gona need to spend for a good install, for this will be the first mod I cant and wont do myself.
Also, my 99 is auto, the guidline is usually that I would go with 4.10's over the 3.73's, which are for the manuals more. What effect does going with the higher gear have vx. the tranny??

I have an 01 thats auto as well but what I've heard is to stick with the 3.73's which I plan to do once I get the cash saved up for them and a t-lok.

I posted about this before the server crash, sorry I can't link you to it...it had ALL your answers. But basically cruisinv6, 4.10's will give you a more explosive out-of-the-hole reaction and your top end will be slightly limited. 3.73s are much better on the top end. However, it's a pain to drive em' as daily drivers, for manuals at least. I guess the auto's stick with 4.10's but will be driving around in overdrive at around 2500+ RPM at 50mph.

I have been told that if I put 3.73 gears on, it will feel like a whole new car, but I just don't like the idea of the engine running at higher rpm's all the time. That has to drop the fuel economy, and with gas at $2.50 a gallon, that matters! I manage to get just about 21 mpg now with my driving; if gears would drop that down to 19 or 18, well hell I might as well a V8. Also does the fact that the engine runs at higher rpm's mean it is more likely to run into major problems sooner? I may be way off base with my thinking here; if so, I'm sure someone will let me know.

The truth is, most of the time one won't even realize the change in gas usage. I mean, unless you count the miles every single time.
The thing about how the engine might come into problems sooner, I'd really like to know about that too...does anybody know?

There's no noticable change in gas.....all i do is shift earlier than usually...for example, i stay on first gear until 10mph, 2nd until 15-20, 3rd until 25-30, 4th until 35-40...so ill be at 40-40+ on the 5th gear...and when im on the freeway i stay 60-70....and it will be between 2000-2400 RPMS...In my opninon,,, that is not bad...i only bash the gas pedal when i want to, and i like the feeling of being push back form ure seat...also, if you like driving 80+ on the freeway consistenly then dont get gears....i usually drive the limit, and thats perfect with the gears... like i said you can still bash the gas pedal and hit 80-80+, man even 100, but you can't stay on that speed for a long period of time...and last, you dont even need to go that fast, just stay in the limit, hey at least ure not ticket prone anymore when u get gears...

I paid 260 for the install, almost 200 for the tlok(gefracing.com), used 3.73 gears that had lesds than 10000 miles for 42 dollars, new bearing kit for 90, and a 23 tooth speedo for 20... so all together about 600..

Well, I have to drive back and forth to school once a week or so. Highest speed I go is 70, thats 5 over. I only go faster if passing. Think that I should pass on the gears?

As pricey as it is, gears and a T-lok are probably the BEST thing you can do to your stang right now other than getting a blower, heads/cam, etc. I'd say suck it up and get em'. I HOPE to get mine over the summer when I can actually make the money to pay for them.

good post! thanks for the info. I will be doing these mods very soon and this was helpful. I still am not too clear on the 3.73 vs 4.10 for an auto tranny ...can someone post more info on the difference?

Thanks.

higher gears give you more oopmh. the higher the number the faster acceleration you get but the lower top end. also the higher the gears the more your gas mileage suffers because the higher gears cause your car to cruise at higher rpms than it normally would. i dont know about auto but a stock 5spd @ 60mph is running at 1800rpms, swap in 4.10 gears and your now cruising @ 60 at 2400 rpms. the most popular choice is 3.73 for manuals and 4.10 for autos. this is because the autos come with higher gears stock(3.55 i believe?) than the manuals do. hope that helps a little

Why is it a pain in the ass to drive them? Because you have to shift more often?

Gears best mod ever. 3.73 for manual definitley.

I would try to find a reputable shop to do it. Try to find a local board to ask around on.

Ahh ... I've got 3.73's and Tlock. As mentioned before, the best mod you can do, to wake up a virtually stock V6. I'll be honest, I have noticed it uses more gas. Mind you i'm sure it's related to the fact that I probably drive it a bit rougher now, considering the increased oomph, as it was said .

Also, getting use to the RPM range difference in the shifts will take a bit. Atleast it did for me, in normal daily driving situations.

We put 4.10s and a T-Lok in my wife's 04 V6 auto and it's one of the best mods there is in our opinion. No noticeable drop in gas mileage with normal (repeat normal) driving both in town or long trips.
