Just bought my first mustang. Turns out it's a 3.9 V6. Aside from the Bore or stroke difference will aftermarket parts fit this motor ? I'm thinking along the lines of cold air induction or cat back exhaust.

I remember reading something from Ford awhile back that said there is no displacement difference in the 3.9 and the 3.8. They just rounded up when converting from cui or something.

Short block, no. I'm not sure if the heads have been redesigned or the such. They just upped the displacement number so it looks pretty.

I'm pretty sure its the same way with the 4.0 in the new V6s.

the 4.0 in the new V6's is a completely different motor. it is a SOHC motor based on Ford's Cologne engine design.

The 3.9L motor was a special edition for the 2004 model year. And yes,the 3.9 is a slightly different motor.More specifically,it's a 3.9L Windsor.Th3 3.8's were not Windsor motors.I had an argument with one of the tech's at work several months back on this. There is no physical difference in the block between the two.But because it comes from a different manufacture, they rounded the number off more precisely. 3.8's are actually 3.89L but Ford just called it a 3.8. "Some" parts under the hood are different but most everything is the same. The PCM programming may be different but I'm not sure on specifics.
