hi guys, got a simple or complicated problem depending on how you look at it. ive been looking at getting a 331 stroker long block or crate engine for a while now and lately ive seen alot of posts about the regular blocks only lasting to about 500 hp unless you go to a boss block. im planning on running a KB blower in the future and would like to get around 6-700 hp on pump gas. being that you have to go with a boss block in a 302 based engine that brings the long block / crate engings in both the 302 and 351 to the same price range. so im looking at your opinions on weather to go with a 302 base or a 351 into a 94 cobra. im not terribly familiar with what is needed with the 351 swap though

In my humble opinion, the 351 is the way to go for that power range. The stock block 351 can handle around that much horsepower if it's machined and built with care. I priced it one time and came out way less for a completely built and assembled forged piston'd 351 than the price of just an aftermarket 302 based block.

When you figure in the cost of the aftermarket block(Boss or R302), machining and stuffing it with some forged slugs, your price range is well over 2 grand.

On the other hand, you gotta figure in the cost of a hood, headers, distributor, oil pan/pickup/driveshaft, and lower intake manifold. If you shop wisely, you can get all this pretty cheap and still be under the aftermarket block budget. But remember, the aftermarket engine will handle even more HP than the 351 will, if that's your ultimate goal.

My vote is 351! It's also nice to say "it's gotta 351 windsor in it!!"

well anything over 600 whp is my aim, and i guess if i realy need more i can just aftermarket the 351 block, i might go with a 393 out of the hole anyways, ive got a guy who im told, builds race motors so the more i think about it the better the 351 sounds

ive got a 94 cobra and from my understanding the cobra R model came with a 351 so is a hood realy needed?

the Cobra R came with a Cobra R hood....which is raised to accomodate the 351. So yes, a hood really is needed unless you plan on doing some other things to drop the engine to fit under the stock hood.

so what all is needed to get a 351 into my car, does the cobra r use diffrent motor mounts or the same ones for the 302, this is my understanding at the moment hood, headers, distributor, oil pan/pickup/driveshaft, and lower intake

here is where you can find all the info you will ever need to know about putting a 351 motor into your car ...

1. click on "94-95 Tech"

2. click on "Search this Forum"

3. type in "351 393 408 winsdor"

4. click on the threads that are displayed.

5. read the threads, there will be lots of great info

Just thought I would let you guys know that a aftermarket hood is not always needed.

Not sure how Saleen did it on the S351'S......maybe Convert motor mounts?? I know Fox body convert mounts lower the engines in Foxbodys.

I just bought another 1995 S351 that is the base model with a N/A 351W. Rated at 371Hp and 422Ft lbs. It has the stock hood and it fits fine!! These came with the extrude honed cut and welded spacer on the upper plenum Cobra intake on them.

damn dude, where do you find these S351s? you must have owned almost half of them at one point or another by now

I wish I could get one in every color too!!:nice:

This one I just got was a steal of a deal. I bought it sight unseen out of Virginia and had it shipped out to Seattle. I'm going to drive this one...my other one I don't drive in the rain it's a summer only toy.

I mentioned the Cobra intake to let everyone know that it fits, so other intakes that are taller might not make it.

Heres a pic.

I'd definitely say 351. I have a 347 in my car and really wish when I built it I would have gone with a big Windsor instead. Like they have always said is so many different ways. There is no substitute for cubic inch. Bigger IS better. There is no replacement for displacement. If you want big hp on a gas motor the more cubic inches the better.

ok well im going to go 351, stroked to either 393 or 408, so what exactly do i need ive got a pretty good understanding , this is a list for my application by the way and im just looking to get it running at the moment so im going with whatever i can reuse from my cobra engine

-lower intake mani
-oil pan in a 94??? ive heard yes and ive heard no,
-distributor
-stroker kit

-what is needed to fit the 351 under the stock hood cause damn does the s351 look good???

-shorty headers or can i use my bbk longs i have
-pro m 90 mm maf for 42 pound injectors
-fuel rail crossover extension

this is what im planning on starting with, using the cobra heads for a little while untill i have the money for some nice ones if there is anything anyone would recomend definatly doing while the engine is out let me know the goal is 600 WHP

for 600 rw, you'll need a blower. so you should spec the motor now with 9.0:1 or so compression. also have a blower cam put in now.

the stock oil pan will not fit

you need conversion headers. check with pokageek for his shorties, or buy my kooks :)

stock hood means rockers that fit under stock size valve covers. comp pro magnums

also either drop engine mounts or a k-member

i'm not sure about the accessory brackets

Brackets will bolt right up. FRPP has an oil pan kit specifically for this swap and it's only a smidge over 100 bucks, so you can't go wrong there. You'll also need a different flywheel and balancer, which is 28oz imbalance.

-351w roller block
-blower cam
-lower intake mani
-oil pan -distributor
-stroker kit with 9.0 compression
-drop mounts
-swap headers
-pro m 90 mm maf for 42 pound injectors
-fuel rail crossover extension
-comp pro magnum rockers

what are some good heads to use on the 351 and what is the stock cobra head chamber size? also what size rockers 1.6 , 1.7??

kind of trying to avoid buying the heads right away but if i realy need to i will
