Well I'm shooting from the hip here, as nitrous is still kind of like black magic to me. So take this with a grain of salt

I would say go 331. The more stroke you add, the smaller the area above the piston crown becomes. Because a dry nitrous shot has a propensity to detonate, AND you're using hypeuretic slugs, you're much more likely to crack one.

Although, the faster piston speed of a 347 means you're not at TDC as long, which reduces detonation...

I don't know man, either way, I'd be really conservative tune wise with the stock bottom end.

we should gather together a comprehensive guide to the pros and cons of the 306, 331, and 347 and make it a sticky and lock it. anyone agree? that would help curb the weekly 331 vs. 347 thread and would also eliminate the childish arguing.

I'm on the same road. I'm thinking about a 331 or 347 for my next motor. I want to use a r302 or boss 302 if they ever get hp ratings on the block. I want the combo to last a few years before the rebuild and I want it for a turbo combo so what would be better for a boosted app. with a aftermarket block?

I almost hate to jump back into this thread...

If you're going aftermarket block, get a Dart with a 347 for a turbo motor. Turbo's LOVE longer stroke and faster piston speed. It will spool up much nicer.

I'm headed the 331 route as I got a good deal on rods, crank and a block from a friend. I was really up in the air about it. But once the deal came along, my mind was made up.

One thing nobody mentioned what that oil is cheap... so what if you get a little blow by. Go get a few quarts of oil and check oil @ stoplights. No biggie.

I built a 347 which I loved by the way. second gear didn't stand a chance. no oil consumption issues to speak of. power beyond my wildest dreams, and I had nothing custom from ed curtis or anybody.
tfs track heat heads, stage 2 cam and r intake. I can only imagine if I had one of ed's cams or packages. Go 347. My engine builders response to when I asked him 331 or 347 was..... are you asking me seriously?

I had to post, I couldn't believe that after a year or so since I built my engine and about the same time since I have posted on stangnet, the first post I see when I open a page is the oil buring conspiracy.

I don't know if I will get 100K out of my 347, but it's not a grocery getter that I really expected to get 10 years worth or work out of in the first place.

good luck

at first i was begining my 408 stroker carb build....being layed off cuts down on monwy so im putting it off...no im thinking about staying fuel injected and doing a 331 or 347.....i am using a 100 shot of nos (wet) oil burn dosent consern me too much. 100K is not to important because i put like 3000 a year on my car...but i want it to last like at least 50k haha... i was misinformed about the pin to close and losing oil and all that...so i am curious what way to go... 331,347 or carbed 408? i will be using wet nos 100 on any of the 3.

Grady i would personally like your opion, but if you dont want to get involved with this thread then ok.

Come on Grady. You know you have something to debunk.

I'm just wondering how engine "side load" is associated with the oil consumption thing. I have a very reputable builder as well .... but he never said anything like that. BTW, this is NOT directed toward you Chris. I guess I'm just trying to pry the subject a little more, hehe.

What I understood my builder to say ....

1.) Comsumption came from wrist pin / rod length in the 347s'. (which I agree is a problem of the PAST!)

&

2.) Side load is a whole different problem. And NOT a problem in most people's eyes.

OK ... OK ... I'll state my opinion due to popular request

347

347's did have oil issues that is true
however
that was a long time ago
and
that problem has been fixed for quite some time now.

That story, unfortunately is still being passed around to this day

347's have a rod ratio that is more severe than 331's that is true
however
that amount of severity has been over emphasized so much ..........

It really has become a classic example of internet myth at its finest

If I was to build myself a 5.0 based stroker ..........

I want all the advantages I can get from it
and
331 don't give me as much advantage as 347

I grew up hearing a statement
and
I've seen that statement work
on the street
and
the 1/4 mile strip
time and time again over the years

"There is no replacement for displacement"

Ok. If there were anyone's advice I would take it IS GRADY's. Now, isn't this statement that ou made dependant upon the BUILDER? Given the answer is YES. Who do y...who would you trust to build your 347 Grady?

A bad rod ratio = "side load" ..... in case any are wondering what I was talking about. Thanks for clarifying that Grady. But no, I don't think it's so BAD that one should worry, lol.

The oil thing came about from parts that were not effective at controlling the oil.

Newer, more effective parts came along which fixed the problem
so
the builder or his skill does not come into play in this case.

Having a motor built is not all that much unlike:
having a Pro tune your Stang
having a Pro align your Stang
having a Pro paint your Stang

You wanna find a guy who can give good references
and
Those references check out to be good references

If you wanna go with a local guy ......

you can go to your local 1/4 mile strip
and
ask peeps who the local motor building Guru is.

If you wanna go with a ready built short block .....

I think Paul and Mike used a fellow by the name of Rick
You could use Mark over at CHP
There is DSS
and others

IIRC, Vibe had a 347 built so you could search there as well
