Hey guys, you are going to be seeing a lot of stupid questions coming from me in the next few months cause I am so new with 5.0 motors. I want to build a track car, don't plan on keeping it street legal, at least not in the long run. I have an 88 notch with just a 302 bored to a 306. I know the weak point in these cars is the block. What blocks can hold good power? Say over 600hp. Also, do 347 make good power or should i go with say a 408 or 410? Would a 408 or 410 be worth the cost and can you actually find parts for Windsors easily? Like I said, bear with me, I'm new to the 5.0's. I would like a 410 but I'm hearing that a 347 with a YSI trim Vortech can make some good power. Like what kind of power or quarter mile times can you see with a combo like that? Is a 347 big enough to run a big blower like a YSI trim? I could ask a million questions in the same thread so i better stop here. Cliff notes, what is a good power combo to get an 88 notch into the 10's at the strip, with or without power adder (no nitrous though, car already has it on but I hate refilling bottles). Help a mod noob out please. I'll wait to get into the whole what heads and cam later. I'm just excited about my new toy and want to make it haul ass.

Yea i would have to agree too. You could stick with a 302, but you would have to go with an aftermarket block like Dart or Boss. If you go with a 351 roller block they will handle those 600 hp power limits easily. A 351 stroked out to a 408 with a healthy set of heads like AFR 225 and a Systemax II intake with a custom cam would make a lot of power N/A. then toss a YSi trim Vortech on there and push 15 pounds of boost you would me making huge power! This is almost my dream engine setup! Nice!

Go with the 408:nice:

You can use 302 heads on a 408, but they will more than likely be a bit small:)

You can not reuse the intake physically though, or the cam...

I'd go with a Dart block...it's going to run you $2,000 though.

Hey man, i would go with a 408-427ci stroker. I was in the same situation you are in about a year ago. The little extra work its going to take to put the 400+ci windsor in there is worth it. The way i looked at it was, i am building a whole new motor to install in the car, so i will be buying all new parts, i.e. distributor./intake/heads/headers for the motor anyway, so the swap parts needed to be used on the 351 (the parts i listed above) you are gonna be buying anyhow, so why not go with the 351? I decided to go with a 427w and went with a set of custom JE forged pistons, and eagle rods and crank with a dart block, because i eventually want to go turbo or blower. I installed a set of brodix track 1 225cc heads only because they had the biggest chambers available (68cc) i could find in a 225cc head to keep the compression at a blower friendly 9.2:1. The YSi would be a perfect compliment to a motor like this. Now that i look back on it, i would have went with a 357w only because i would have had more head choices, because the pistons probably could have been off the shelf and i could have kept the compression down with a head with a smaller chamber. If you have any questions feel free to ask me. There are a bunch if guys on here that have done the swap and dont regret it one bit. I will be taking mine to the track tomorrow night.

Friends's 92LX hatch drag car with a Dart 347 and 20lbs from a YSi put down 820/660 @ the RW with a Mondo cooler. went 8.90 and 155mph. went to a 364ci stroker with AFR 225 heads, same amount of boost and put down 905/720 @ the RW and turned a 8.70 and put the car on the bumper. 331/347's can make alot of power. Best one of the dyno was a R347 with Stage 3 TFS-R heads put down 1050rwhp on 28lbs from a YSi.

U can get a mexican block that r usually good to 700-800rwhp or get a Dart block and build a 347.

or u can go 351W. But get a 1969-1972 351W block good to 1000fwhp and go a 408 or 418.

it comes down to money and choices of how much hp do I want.

will you post the ins and outs of building a 427

will you post the ins and outs of building a 427

Just to help out for a little until you get a response...

A 427 can be had a couple ways:

"Big Bore" with a Dart block consisting of a 4.125" bore/4.000" stroke/6.250" rod.

With a typical rebore of 4.030", and a 4.170" stroke, 6.125" rod, works but I think some extra material needs to be taken off the rods to clear up top near the cam area.

If you want a power adder/boosted combo you do not need a large cube motor to acheive some very fast times... There are many t hings to consider when building a combo, the large cubic inch motors typically have a short CH piston and the off the shelf options are not always ideal for boost, so custom pistons will be needed.

Any small cube stroker with all the proper components with the properly sized blower will go 10's with ease.......

Do yourself a favor and start with a good foundation, look into a DART block based motor for strength and reliabilty.

Don't forget about your chassis, safety equipment, drivetrain....they will all need improvent if your planning on that power level. What is your budget?
