351 block questions

so ive been looking for a 351 block to start my 408 project, iv head alot about how the porduction blocks should hold up to around 600 hp. but it get iffy around there due to the 2 bolt main caps

so i found this block

with 4 bolt mains on 2, 3, and 4

all in all im looking for around 600-700 hp at the wheels and would like to know if this should hold up to the task

i would like to avoid spending 3 grand for a dart block or such, and this clock comes in at 1800 so its not to bad

also i have found this same block with either a 9.2 inch deck or 9.5 inch, why would that be??

That be an R block, there is alot of work that need done to that block to use it. You have to finish all the bores including the lifters and crank line honeand the decks.

Anything you can make a 302 block do, a 351W can do it that much better, and safer. Think about the people on here with 347's hitting 500+ HP. A 351W can handle this easily without even stroking it.

all i wanted to know is if this block will hold up to a supercharged 600-700 hp at the wheels

or if a good condition production block will do the same

the car will be mostly daily driven, (summer time) and will see occasinal track time

plans for the car are, 408 stroker, pro-charger, viper t-56 trans, and full griggs suspension

Until 1974 the 351W had a respectible amount of nickel content. These are the most desired blocks. Not that anything after is bad, just not as strong. The other thing is the roller setup that changed the blocks in the early 80's. You have to choose your medicine unless, you want to modify the pre roller blocks into a roller setup. Any stock block can handle 600+, but you better have the guts to go with it.

i believe that also the 1969 to 1974 blocks had a shorter deck height and is better for more compression but will need addition machine work done for a stroker (notching the block but for a 408 this may have to be done anyways)

the roller blocks for a 351w didnt come out till around 1995 if i remember right. some before that came prepared for roller lifters but actually had flat tappet lifters. and again i dont know if maybe there ones that prepared roller but came factory with flat tappet would still need some addition machine work to be made roller. i have an 89 model block that i will be installing retro roller rockers in in the near future
