I know there are countless opinions on this, but what is the best intake/carb combo for a 351W punched to a 408 (currently being done at the builder), with the car mostly being a strip car with occational weekend cruises? (HP goal is 450-500). The engines getting forged internals, with AFR 205 heads, with the compression ratio being around 10.25:1. 351 swap headers will make up the exaust side. No PS, PB, or Air. What cfm will be needed? Also, what intakes will/will not fit under the 1965 hood? (If need be, the hood will/can be "clearanced" )

Although the biggest intakes that fit under the stock 65 hood are the edelbrock RPM and Wiend Stealth, neither are optimal for a primarily strip driven car with a 408.

Your best choice would probably be to add a hood scoop and use a Vic Jr. Carb wise, I would be looking at a minimum of an 850cfm HP Holley (or a custom from someone like BIGS.)

Hmmm A stealth or eddy rpm will be the only ones that fit under a 65 hood. Now I have also heard about these "drop motor mounts" that can lower the motor some..but the engine getting lower to the ground may not be the best solution..I would say get yourself a cowl hood, maybe 3"incher so you can fit a Air~gap or a Vic JR underneath.

As far as a carb goes a 850 holley, or that new demon carb may fit the bill. I saw it in the latest issue of PH. Its a Demon carb with vac seconds, but it has the newest tech and can performe better than larger carbs in the race class.

My 2 cents:

Stay away from the dual planes and look towards a low-rise single for clearance issues or vic jr. if clearance is not a problem. Gasket match and they will handle as much as that stroker will spin.

for your combination and intended purpose you need a victor jr intake, and the 850 carb mentioned. you wont be able to drop the motor enough in the chassis, without alot of mods, to use a stock hood with that engine/intake and card combo.

You cannot get the motor low enough to put the Vic Jr under the stock 65' hood. I've tried before and got the motor so low that the steering hit the starter in a right hand turn.

Now that I've installed a mini starter (and the fact that I have an open 65' shelby scoop), I am going to try again in the near future.

To fit that larger intakes, I guess a hole will be cut in the hood, and some kind of scoop will be put on..(maybe a carb scoop w. circular butterfly openings?
