i don't know ... the more i think about it, the more i like it
from the one perspective, it is modding an otherwise 100% stock classic car that is probably more valuable stock than it would be modified
from the other perspective, it provides an acceptable compromise to my dilemma. i mean, i have poured so much time, energy, and money into this project that if i just drop it completely, i will be extremely disappointed and lose about 10 grand. and the thing i have really poured the most money and effort into is that engine. putting that engine (with a good intake and carb) into the fairlane would make the fairlane a car to be reckoned with on the street, and admired at a show.
bottom line: if i put the 410 into the fairlane, i would not feel as though all the time, money and energy i have spent the last year was completely wasted, i will be able to have closure to my current mustang project, and i will be able to say goodbye to the mustang without as many regrets. if i sell the stang as is, i will take a huge loss, both monetarily and emotionally.
if i keep the 390 and C6 somewhere in storage for later, then if i decide to (or need to) sell it, then i can put the original 390 back in and the car will not have lost its value.
ps - my son is now 17 and will be getting his license soon. the car we have set aside for him is a 1993 caprice classic station wagon. my daughter is now 14. there is a camry waiting for her. the caprice and the camry are currently owned by my wife's parents, neither of who can drive anymore because of their age

) That car SUCKED with the stock springs and brakes. At least that GT should have disc brakes.
