351 Windsor in a 67 Fairlane GTA?

i don't know ... the more i think about it, the more i like it

from the one perspective, it is modding an otherwise 100% stock classic car that is probably more valuable stock than it would be modified

from the other perspective, it provides an acceptable compromise to my dilemma. i mean, i have poured so much time, energy, and money into this project that if i just drop it completely, i will be extremely disappointed and lose about 10 grand. and the thing i have really poured the most money and effort into is that engine. putting that engine (with a good intake and carb) into the fairlane would make the fairlane a car to be reckoned with on the street, and admired at a show.

bottom line: if i put the 410 into the fairlane, i would not feel as though all the time, money and energy i have spent the last year was completely wasted, i will be able to have closure to my current mustang project, and i will be able to say goodbye to the mustang without as many regrets. if i sell the stang as is, i will take a huge loss, both monetarily and emotionally.

if i keep the 390 and C6 somewhere in storage for later, then if i decide to (or need to) sell it, then i can put the original 390 back in and the car will not have lost its value.

ps - my son is now 17 and will be getting his license soon. the car we have set aside for him is a 1993 caprice classic station wagon. my daughter is now 14. there is a camry waiting for her. the caprice and the camry are currently owned by my wife's parents, neither of who can drive anymore because of their age

OK... STOP!!

Why not put a big block in there?? stop messing with these small stroked engines, and go to a BIG stroked engine!! The 429 base will bolt in using the 390 mounts, need to change the FE C6 to a 429/460 C6, the trans mounts/shifter ect all change out.. drive shaft is the same... and use the Headers from a 72 429 Mustang!! then stroke the sucker to a 514 or a 544/572 ect.. and have it all!!

Then by god maybe you messed with the Muscle car... but NO ONE will say any thing....

Thumper...I think he's "married" to the 410.

A little quote I read a while back...

"In your quest for "more", you fail to enjoy that which you already have."

There is no getting through to him.

i already have this 410 (that i put probably $10,000 into!) sitting there in my mustang doing nothing. i don't have another $10,000 to put into another motor, period. and even if i did, i have no desire to go down that road again right now

so it is either leave the original 390 in there or put the 410 it in the fairlane.

heh, i just read antigone with my daughter for her english class. i am reminded of king creon and the prophet teiresias ... me being the king and you being the prophet.

maybe i should just pull the 410 and put it in storage and then sell the stang as a roller and be done with it. i don't want to open up another pandora's box

but you can't blame me for wanting to keep the windsor

with the lower and carb i'd change it to, it would have probably 500 hp, while the 390 in there now has closer to 325

i think i might have it pulled and then have my mechanic look into the details like if the water or power steering pump(s) need to be changed.

Whats about the rear end in the fairlane? Any rust spots on the underside? Fuel tank and lines good? What about the brakes?

Flat out is the fairlane up to snuff to hold the power the 410 could put out? There could be some money right there just getting it to the point of being able to safely be usable with the 410.

Yep. Just make sure you get the right intake for it. I have the wrong one on mine and it killed the top end. Stops pulling at 4650 and goes STRAIGHT down on tq and HP. Tops out at 420 hp, when it should pull over 500.

Drop the 410 in.

Unfortunately... you are going to be nickle and dimed when you do this. If you are able to sell the stang as a roller, then this will cover and it and go a long way towards the drivetrain you'll need.

You can fit a big block in there, the small block won't be a problem... should be fine for headers. The water and P/S might require some imagination but I don't think it will be all that bad.

Good luck!

Adam

Why, thank you. (I think.) I thought for sure I'd pi$$ you off by saying exactly what I thought. ;)

Hell no I don't blame you for wanting to keep/ use the Windsor! I would, too! You would never get your money back, just selling it as it is. (That's why I said to put a JY motor/trans in it.) I would keep the Windsor for another fun project. (That 390 can come pretty close to your 500hp, with some bolt-ons.)

i'm also going to sell a bunch of other stuff, like the manual valve body i got for the 4R70W, the 4R70W, the MM control arms i never installed, the wheels and tires, the kooks headers, ...

all that will definately cover the cost of this stuff and then some.

That sounds cool..I mean to have a motor powerful enough to say jus tadd some bolt ons to 500 lol

I would either sell the 410 itself and put a stock 302 in the sn95 and sell it.

OR

Pull the 410 and either plan to put it in the fairlane or keep if for something down the road puting a stock 302 in the sn95.

The c6 is best auto Ford has ever built and IMHO only second to the th400 in handling power. I would not worry about much with just few aftermarket parts and a solid compitent rebuild without going nuts on cost.

I agree 110% with you keeping the motor (and even stock trans) aside to put back in it.

PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT GO TBI...just carb it and go, makes it 1,000x's easier to swap back to the stock stuff later without investing in more crap you will loose money on. You can put the EFI money into the chassis/brakes.

And that is certainly is something that should be done, even if you keep the OE power levels. I had a 1966 F'lane. (Oddly enough, it was a 351w w/ Windsor Sr heads and a NICE cam. It was a 4 speed, though. Hard to break a Toploader. :nice: It was originally a 2v 289/automatic. :barf: :nonono: ) That car SUCKED with the stock springs and brakes. At least that GT should have disc brakes.

it is the first year they put the disc brakes in

don't worry, i'm not going tbi or anything like that ... it is staying carbed

there are 2 guys on corral right now looking for roller verts ... maybe one of them will take mine.
