I am an automotive instructor in Miramar, FL. We just acquired a '95 Mustang with a 351 c.i. engine with Trick Flow heads and intake, Tremec trans, 31 spline rear, 3:73 gears. This car looks like it was put together great but not maintained properly for the past 5 years or more. It still runs strong.

I am going to have the students do a compression test on it before we pull it out to go through it. The car was painted saphire blue but they did not do the engine compartment so I will have the students pull the engine to freshen it up and send the car out to be painted.

Questions:

What kind of horsepower should i expect with short tube headers and 3 inch exhaust?
What kind of gaskets do you guys use? Are the Mr Gasket ultra seals good enough or do I need bigger port gaskets for the Trick Flow heads and intake?
 
As I'm sure you already know, the horse power is a function of how much air the engine can use. To that end, there are components in addition to those you have already told us about that will affect the kind of power the engine will make ... any restriction in any of the following (Mass Air Meter, Throttle Body, intake, exhaust) will limit the horsepower. The profile of the cam can and also have a profound effect on the power it makes.

Can you tell us more about the cam and the induction components?

I have a 351W in my 94. I have shorty headers and 2.5" exhaust and it put down 340 to the wheels on the old combo, the new combo in my sig should be around 370-380 according to my MPH trap speed at the track but I wont know until its dyno tuned this spring. As far as the gaskets Im not sure what was used.

not until I get it apart and do some measurements, the MAF sensor doesn't look like anything I have seen before. The throttle body is a Trick Flow 75mm and the tube from t-body to MAF says Pro-M on it. looks like this:

obviously someone has done some home calibrating
 
from the looks of those pictures, i would expect the motor to make at most 350 horses at the wheels. that mass air setup is definately, um .... unique, it has what looks like a street heat upper intake, and the elbow (as is typical of a 94/95 elbow) slows the air down with its contortions

speaking of air flow restrictions, my engine is is the poster child ... with the elbow and the pro products intake i have on it, it is surely gasping for air
 
Thats Def. a Trickflow R intake. They come in 2 flavors 75mm and 90mm inlet. Based on the funky Tickflow elbow size i would say its a 75mm. But you can know for sure by unbolting the elbowand measuring. If youre reassembling this thing your best bet would be to ditch the elbow and get the 89-93 throttle cable and the 75mm or 90mm throttlebody. It will majorly simplify the setup and increase air flow. As far as the heads, check the part number on them....i believe its under the valve cover. The part number for the intake in under the upper plenum nest to the vacuum ports. A simple Google of the part number will give you plenty of info. I personally use felpro gaskets. Gaskets for Trickflow parts are best gotten from Trick Flow as their parts are not standard sizes. I forget the standard lower intake gasket size on a small block ford....but if factory size gaskets seem too small you may have a more race oriented head requiring a 1262 gasket from felpro.

I am assuming it is 75mm since the elbow is a BBK and says 75mm right on it.

If I get rid of the elbow and get the 89-93 throttle cable, what tubing do I use to turn the air into the throttle body??? Do I get some sort of cold air intake system (I have to get one anyway because this car just has the air filter sitting where the filter housing used to be.:notnice:

I am probably going to use Loc-wire head gaskets since we will most likely be addin a power adder...maybe 2:nice:
 
LOL. I meant Blowoff Valve! nonooo just kidding.

As to intakes:
BV I meant your PP intake is very restrictive. When I had that on my car its HP maxed out at 4600RPM. I am wondering if my edel vic intake is even enough? My car now max's HP at 5200 and my cam goes to 6500rpm.
 
I got to be honest, that engine doesn't look wide enough to be a 351. It looks like a 302, but it's awefully hard to tell by the angle of that picture.

Easy way to tell if its a 351......Is the bottom bolt for the thermostat housing a bitch to get to??? if it is you have a 302. :D The intake does look like it sits pretty high. My intake is the Box R and sits about a few inches higher than that one. I attached a pic of a stock engine (below the motor mounts & strut tower brace) 2nd pic is a 351 block with 3/4" lowering motor mounts Trickflow R intake 75mm with a 1" Spacer.
