Im thinking about building up a Turbo Friendly 351W for my '94.

My only plans thus far is a 351W, Compression in the 8.5-9.0 Range, GT40X's with some porting done, Sporting the FRPP F303 cam and then some sort of stroker kit. I would like something in the 380 Cubic inch(383?) range. I think the 408 is a little to much for what Im going to do.

Im looking for something to put out around 400+hp N/A and then when I hit it with the Boost have it go 600+

The Question:
I think I found a 351W but don't know much about them and don't want to get a junk motor. The guy says it's a 4" bore w/ 3.5" stroke and came out of a 1975 Gran Torino Elite.

What all will I need beside what I listed??? I know the Crane roller cam conversion but other than that??? 50oz imbalance stuff??

Try to find a 69-74 block if you can, these were the strongest production years. Why gt-40 "x" heads? Consider a set of TFS "R" or brodix track1, or victor jr's, all depends on you're budget. Dont even cosider a letter cam from fms, bigger cubic in will want bigger parts. A solid 393 stroker such as svt's will make more than 400hp n/a. I have almost done (waiting for carb) a 418 with "R" heads that should make around 575-600 fwhp n/a on pump gas Good luck. Email me if you have any questions, or pm.

well I'm am getting the money together to do a 408 in my 95. I'm going a good bit wilder though but I would either use a roller block 351 found in I believe 94 and later trucks, might be 95 or a new sportman 351 block good for 900 HP. then I would buy a complete stroker kit. If you are going to keep it to 600fwhp then you might get away with a cast crank and I beams. Again I'm going for broke with mine with the expectations of 800+ fwhp when i finally get some boost on it but to do it right is very expensive. If 600 fwhp is your goal I may stick to a girdled B block 331-347 and save some headaces and $$$. that motor will likely take advantage of the smaller gt40x heads better and easily make 400 hp N/A and 600 hp with a turbo. the X heads and F cam are way to small to take full advantage of a 377+ ci stroker. To do it right (and that includes buying the correct parts to take full advantage of the power cababilities of the stroker) I am figureing about 4000 over and above the cost of the engine to get it up and running, kooks headers, intake, H pipe, dist, AJE K member, clutch and flywheel, maf, tb, etc etc. If you already have a lot of parts for a 302 then you may want to really price it out, think about your power goals, and see what you really need. IMO. there is no sense spending the cash for a 351w base stroker to get a 4-425 hp motor when you could have that with a 302 base engine IMO a good 393-408 should make 525-575 hp n/a but it cost ya.

If a 351 based stroker (393,408 ect..) only makes 400-425 hp something was done wrong A good 393-408 will make 550-600 hp n/a, what will a good 347 make?? 425-475 roughly ( for same money), so around another 75-100 hp more and not to mention torque out of a 351 based stroker. The money difference is minimal. If building a 302 based motor, I would have bought all the same parts I did on my 418.
price comparo for 302/351
Block, machine work, girdle, rotating ass, rings, bearings, oil pump ect.... rotating assembly balance:needed on both at same cost.
oil pan: most people prefer a 7qt on a hi. perf motor, but ok you could have scrimped there and gone with the rusty stocker or stock replacement
Heads, cam, intake, rockers, pushrods, timing set, induction (carb or efi) again, same money for both with this exception; costing me around $300 more for larger carb due to cubic inch.
Roller cam conversion: I think the retro fit kit is under $200, and to get the two holes drilled and tapped for hold down wouldnt be any thing significant. There is always the option of finding a roller ready 351 block too.
Distributor: matter of preference, I would have bought new with either motor.
Headers: I would not keep 1 5/8 shorties or longtubes on a new motor i'm looking to squeeze 450-600 hp out of n/a. My kooks were expensive yes, but I could have bought cheaper ones (hooker for exp) so around $150 more for 351 headers.
Exhaust system: can run exsisting one (if already have) on either, I opted for 3'' the whole way, un-needed expense.
K-member:not needed, preference
clutch:same money
flywheel: when making that kind of power, do you really wanna run a stock rebalanced pos
Balancer: read above mention of flywheel.
Hood: Alright, you've got me again, I need to buy a hood. But how many cowl hooded 302 mustangs are out there.

Soooo, not seeing a huge difference in price for a motor that will make more horsepower and torque regardless of n/a or some other sort of forced induction. You could go budget, but i'm giving example of same pieces in each motor. No flames intended, but no REAL difference, just minor things
