351w Power?

I have got a 5.8/351w out of a 1996 F-350, which means that it's a roller block. The motor has stock heads, pistons, and crankshaft. It's also got the FMS F-cam. I wanna like to know what kind of power I can expect out of the motor with a Trick Flow R upper/lower intake, ported stock heads, shortie headers, 30 lb injectors, 75 mm tb, 80 mm mass air, mac fenderwell cold air kit, and various other bolt-ons. I was looking for somewhere in the 330-350 wheel hp range. Any ideas on better way to make power? thanks
 
I'd say less on the power, unless the ported stock heads are a work of art. Probably a ton of torque though. But you aren't towing boats, so...
I wouldn't bother swapping it until you have a better set of heads, like victors, Trick flow R's, and maybe a custom cam. Then you can get it to pack a serious punch, worthy of the extra wieght.
 
use the TFS r intake port matched but change the heads to AFR 205's or TFS R. Comp Cam XE282HR or solid roller, Alphabet cam's suck.

Forget the cold air kit unless it's blown, 2-5rwhp is not worth it. Forget the shorties go ceramic coated LT's 1 7/8" w/ 3" collectors.

easy 400/400 @ the RW, NA on pump gas.

Stroke it to a 392/408 with TFS Hi-port stage 3 heads and all the above and ur close to 500rwhp, NA on pump gas. Bennett Racing has 392/408 strokers with the above that hit this 500 #. u need a head that flows 320/240@ .600 lift. Canfield, TFS R, Victor Jr., AFR 205's massaged, TFS Hi-port Stage 3, etc.

Have it rebuilt and balanced,and put in some replacement pistons that would make 10:1 compression ratio.

Since you already got an F cam you can use that.

Theres a guy called Thumper on here that will port your stock heads to flow good (for stock heads anyways),so not to much money as compared to a set of alum heads.

Use 1.7 RR's,the TFS intake will work fine,but for exhaust definatly use long tubes.BBK makes a set of good chrome headers that arent too much money,or if you got an auto use hookers swap header,both would be 1 3/4" primaries.

And what ever else you need for the swap,one thing do splurg and get a good oil pan.

Even with stock heads it will make at least 1 hp per ci,and ported stocks I would expect probably around 370hp at the fyl wheel,and 400ft-lbs of torque.
 
I think my set up is close to 360 hp at the crank. i should be swapping over to a roller cam and a single plane intake. You can make good power with stock heads but something you have to remember is the stock heads are still just E7's the stock heads from a 302. 351w need more to breathe. If you are on a budget and you want a better head look for a 69 351w head. they have closed chambers for more compression and larger valves. port them and you can get some good flow numbers. I would tend to agree with ditching the cam. its not a huge expense to get a new one. you can even use the same roller lifters on the new cam provided they are not colapsed or show signs of wear. Usally they don't wear and you can swap from cam to cam no problems at all.

Interesting, you say "budget" and suggest having an engine rebuilt that may not need rebuilding.
That's not exactly budget.

A rebuild would likely cost nearly as much as the good heads, if you have to pay labor.

I can agree, that i tend to throw a budget out the window, but i'd rather wait than put together a less than par setup, especially when going as far as installng a 351.

Not much labor in a basic rebuild.

You take it apart,take the pistons/rods to a machine shop,have them put new pistons on.You hone the cylinders and put new rings,bearings and a timing chain in it and your done.


I know you could do more and should,but this is really all you *have* to do to make it run.

its not really all that hard to throw a 351w in a fox. same mounts. if you get a complete engine all you need is swap headers and a flywheel that fits in a t-5 bellhousing. it gets a little expensive if its a block you are starting wth and you have to buy the intake dizzy etc etc etc. but for a stock swap in ut of a pick-up it is a worth while switch. gobs of tire roasting torque. sure you will want a different cam but all you 302 guys do that aswell might aswell do it with 49 more cubes.

first of all, these motors put out 215-230ish at the flywheel from the factory, with about 300 torque, aproximately. What you describe is mismatched. Use 19 pound injectors, maybe 24's, but not 30's. 19 pounds are good to 300 horse or so. Don't waste your time with the e7 heads, if you're on a budget, go straight with some gt40/gt40p explorer heads. With those heads, and your above mentioned mods, I'd expect you'd make 275-300 at the wheels tops.
 
First off that is just way to much intake unless you get some cylinder head, intake, an F cam on that much cubic inch will be almost nothing, and stock heads are horrible, the E7 heads I belive will have to small of a chamber and with the stock size valves it will produce torque but no power.... I'd be willing to bet that an engine like this would be lucky to produce 200-220 RWh and you may as well throw average power out the window considering a 351 with an F cam would make its power between say 1200-5000 and R intake comes on around 2000 really starts pulling around 3500 and peaks around 6500-7000...... it would be easier to make some power with a 302 with the F cam and bolt ons then a bone stock 351 with nothing more then an intake and a F cam
 
Well, you are right, I am on a budget, and the motor has already been rebuilt. It's got all new cam bearings, piston's have been rerung, and its been honed. I was thinking of swapping the f-cam thats in it w/ the trickflow stage 1 or 2, and i would later on down the road match it w/ the track heat heads, but right now its not in my budget. I will port the heads myself, because my buddy works for/at a speed shop, so he'll make sure its done right. Also, i can go w/ longtubes becuase i already got a 2 1/2 exhaust system and would have to change my x-pipe, so I'll just go w/ the shorties. FMS makes a good oil pan kit for the swap also. I wasnt sure if the 30 lb injectors was a little high, but i figured 24's might be a little lean, lemme know what you think
 
porting iron heads sucks.... by the time your done with it you can go get a second job and work 80 hours to but a set of heads rather then port them..... if your skilled at it its one thing but if its all new I bet you will spend a good 30 hours in porting iron heads... What speed shop does your friend work at? There isnt to many good ones near us...
 
for what you're building, you're looking at 250-270ish tops at the flywheel, stock injectors are fine. Save the cash on the intake, and just have the oem one ported.

I dont think I would advise using P heads on a windsor due to the header fitment issues that the Ps have .....IMO.....
 
Just FYI I was on an extreme budget, PLUS purposely
building for low/mid range in a 4,000 road car, but
anyway I shopped around a little and found a set of
lo miles good used Ebrocks for $600. Not maybe the
"latest & greatest" but not that far off for the money.

Mine are the small ones w/only 170 intake ports, but
they do what I wanted them to do. My combo matches
fairly well and it runs real good in my application.

In fact, I built just about all of my motor with good
used stuff or parts leftover from someone else's
projects. Saved about 40% over new.
 
Ya but the thing is, In a year or so, when I do have a decent budget to build the car, I'm going to go with some good heads, like trickflow track heat, and 30 lb injectors, some decent forged 9.5:1 pistons, and maybe even a stroker, or nos. Thats why i need go get some of my base items set up for this motor, like decent injectors, and intake, and probably a tfs stage 2 cam. This current set-up is going to be for getting me by, untill i can afford to build a real street machine
 
has anyone tried out the Jegs/KAASE heads? i never noticed them till the other day i was sitting on the couch and for some reason the pages were turned to that page. has anyone used them and what kinda results did u have?

fitment issue?? they work just fine with a good ol' set of fms headers.

however, good point, as I wonder if the wider 351W is still narrow enough to run the fms headers.
