I have a chance to pick up a pretty fresh 3550 for a good price. Is the new TKO 500 much better? The new TKO is the replaecment for the old 3550 correct? If memory serves me right, the 3550 bolts up to the stock bell housing. Is the new TKO the same?
Thanks

3550 requires a new bell as does the TKO. The tko is better but it depends on what you are doing. The tko 500/600's are the replacement for the 3550 and tko.

I put a 3550 in my 89 GT back in 95-96 and I don't remember buying a new bell. I could swear that I bolted it up the stock bell. Of coarse I could be wrong

With the 3550 you just need a bellhousing and crossmember.

With the TKO you need a bellhousing, new slip yoke, crossmember and possible new clutch assembly. Depending on if you go with the 26 spline version input shaft.

what r your plans for the car? street or strip? how much power are you making? I'm in the market for a new tranny and honestly TKO's are too expensive for me. I think im going with a t5z setup. I like the higher ist and OD ratio's as i run 3.73's. I have heard you loose a little more HP through a TKO than others.

I'm making probably about 350hp at the fly wheel. E cam, ported stock heads, GT40 upper and lower, and about 6-7 psi of boost. Mostly a street car with the occassional trip to the track just for fun

If i were in your position i would consider a T5z before a TKO. Your not making that much power do necessitate a TKO. TKO's are expensive and require a new bell housing and crossmembet i believe. But i supose if you want to just do it once and never worry about it...a TKO may be the way to spend 2g's! good luck

Sorry for my ignorance, afterall, message boards were made for dumb a**es like me who know nothing, but what is a T5z? Is it just an upgraded T5? What can it handle?

Yes upgraded t5, the tremec still beats it. It says it is good to hold 330 ft lbs. of torque.

A break down of the t-5's

If you do get a t-5 at least get the g-force
