393W for $2199 ... damn

So are these blocks any good?

CHP's? I know vib and one or two others on this board have shortblocks from them (347's).

Ive never heard of anyone having issues with shortblocks from them.

Everyone needs to keep in mind that a 351 based stroker can be much more expensive then you think (if you do it right), just ask me or low 5.0. Of course you could just throw cheap crappy parts on it though.

$2199 plus TwEECer R/T ($560). New heads, intake etc. The cost will began to skyrocket. I'd plan at least another $4 grand, minimum, to get the top end and other supporting parts for this block (cams, headers etc). And if you can't do your own work, well, bend over:rolleyes: Why not work the block you already have and just stroke it and add some juice. It would be fast and emission friendly. I passed emissions with flying colors but of course my build is a mild horsey compared to what you want. Plus, if money is of concern, I'd think you'd want something that you can maintain because if its a DD it will eventually give you some issues.

I would have went 393/408/418 but like mentioned the surrounding parts are expensive. Since most of us have 302 based parts already its much easier to go this route. If I had to do it again I would go the same route. I have no issues with my 347 stroker from CHP (1700 miles now). Its streetable and fun when needed. My only issue is the Spec stage III clutch. I wish I had bought a Pro Motion clutch while I had the tranny out. Good luck with your project.

but i want something streetable and mild too, you know maybe 325-350 max at the wheels. i just was thinking that $2199 seemed like a good deal for a 393 shortblock. and if the rest of the stuff was reasonable, it might be a good idea.

"but i want something streetable and mild too, you know maybe 325-350 max at the wheels."

But 325rwhp is so close to the 302 motor it sounds like overkill to go 393 if that's all you want..

1. a typical HCI with exhaust and other bolt-ons usually nets around 300 at the wheels, another 25-50 (streetable hp) at the wheels is hard to come by, isn't it?
2. i need a new bottom end anyway. it has rod knock like crazy under load, and it is burning oil at a rate of 1 quart per tank.

I remember another fella on here with 317RWHP 330+RWTQ as well. Not sure of the details on his combo other than n/a and TFS. But then again, there's a big difference in low end torque between a 5.0 and a larger engine which is always nice.

i just talked to the folks at CHP ...

the long-block ($4099.99) includes:
--- heads: World products windsor junior stage 1 (58cc chamber)
--- cam: hydraulic flat tappet:
------ lift .520/.544 duration 234/244 at 50 112 overlap
--- fps (factory performance systems?) pistons
--- 1.6 rockers
--- dominator timing set
--- clevite 77 p bearings
--- plasma moly rings

shipping would be $450

to finish the bottom end off: about $750
pan: $250 (need new for 351)
pickup: $54.50 (need new anyway)
pump: $57.99 (need new for 351)
drive: $20 (might as well use new one)
timing cover: $74
gasgets: $5 (timing cover), $10 (oil pan), $12.69 (timing cover seal)
bolt kits: he didn't look them up
assembly labor: $250

so the motor with everything but the intake would be about:

$4100 + $450 + $750 = $5300.
