Got a 130a 3g with a 6 groove pulley from a Taurus with correct 180 degree mounting holes, but the clocking is off. Can I remove the three bolts holding the halves of the alternator together and shift the clocking to get it right for installation on my 5.0 3g conversion project?

it's easy to do i did it to mine. yes you remove the 3 bolts, you need to remove the pulley ( if i recall) and slide the front part of the case and re clock it. if you don't have an impact then you'll have to have the auto parts store do it for you. just make sure to remember which direction you want it clocked.......

Euphoric, his connectors are probably in a bad spot. That would be a reason I would reclock it.

how can you tell when your alternator isn't clocked right?

I guess it depends on the position of the voltage regulator.94-95 3g`s are in the stock fox location, roughly the 2 o`clock position whereas the 96 and possibly up 3g Taurus alternators have the voltage regulator in the 7 o`clock position when mounted on a fox.

I have a 96 Taurus 3g ready to go on my 89 and the voltage regulator is on the bottom 7 o`clock position:shrug:big deal,as long as it hooks up it doesn`t matter to me if the regulator is not in the stock position.

If I do have the pulley off to reclock it anyway, should I just go right to the smaller pulley off my stock 5.0 2G alternator? The 3G Taurus 6-rib pulley is about 2-3/4", while my stock 5.0 2G pulley is about 2-1/4". Does the swap normally involve using the smaller pulley?

Sam, I researched this a bit some time ago. I cant recall numbers, but I do remember lookin at the critical speed of the alt with various pulley dimensions.
If not mentioned, I suppose knowing if you run U/D's would help people to provide advice on the pulley.

Good luck bud.

yeah i believe you do take the pulley off to re clock it. your re-clocking the front part of the alt case ( the mounting bolt holes).

as for the pulley, i used the old 2g alt pulley...

however......you may notice on the 3g pulley there's a bit more of a shoulder behind the pulley than there is on the 2 g pulley. i used a very thin washer/shim to put the pulley out to the proper depth.....you may or may not need to do this depending on how your pulley alignment is, which is something you need to check regardless...

the stock 2g pulley on mine with out the washer put the pulley a little to far back.....it may or may not on yours. it's no biggie, easy fix, but regardless of which pulley you use it's a good idea to dry fit the alt and make sure the pulleys line up ok.

you can probably use the 3g pulley, it wont drive it as fast as the 2g one, but you may not need it being driven faster depending on how it acts at idle with everything running....and as hissin suggested, u/d pulleys may also dictate which pulley you would want to run...
