4.10 but no tranny cooler

I've had 4.10 for about 20k-30k miles, but no tranny cooler. Could this be causing any damage, especially if I use my car as a daily driver?

I don't drive it hard often, as gas is too expensive for that now anyway.

Is it safe to drive the car without a tranny cooler as I have? I haven't noticed any performance degredation. I don't want my trans to just up and die one day though because it was unintentionally neglected.

Also, I've changed my trans fluid at the 40k interval, so that has been taken care of.

I'm thinking of ordering a tranny cooler and having the shop install it. Is there any particular one most of you on this board recommend?

If I were you I'd get a tranny cooler soon. It's so easy to install you should also do it yourself. I got the Tranny Cooler out of the Ford Racing Catelog. Most people would suggest a bigger one though. Search for "Tranny Cooler" and there's some good threads about it including reccommended types and install instructions.

first off, yes, you want a cooler soon. you're definitely making a lot of heat in that trans. i suggest dropping the pan sometime soon and cleaning up the valve body, and checking the gasket on top of it. if that gasket is brittle and cracks off, you've been cooking it.

You want a cooler at least the size of a personal-pan pizza. (First thing that poppped into my head..kinda hungry..heh)

A stacked-plate style is perferred, as opposed to finned tubes. I have a Hayden 679.. its usually price-tagged near $70, but mine came up for $40 and I've seen other threads of the same thing happening to other people. Check autozone/oreilly.

I think that the Predator tune in your sig is a bigger fluid quality threat than the gears. Anyway, you should def install one, everyone should really. The www.tccoa.com website has additional technical information on this subject.

If you value longevity and reliability, get a cooler.

There are reasons why vehicles that are set up for harder work (equipped with autos) come with coolers as OEM.

yes a tranny cooler is needed even if you dont have gears, it's a must for an auto tranny to keep working in top notch condition

Use the datalogging feature of your Predator and watch the TFT (transmission fluid temperature). It's under the GAS TRANS section. If you see TFT going above 225*F, then you should really get a cooler.

My auto is getting a bit sloppy on 2nd to 3rd gear shifts.

Oh well, like I care.

you put the cooler in addition to the factory unit. you plumb it inline with the factory one.

there are manual trans coolers, but only for extreme road racing situations. also the new Z06's have coolers. they basically operate with an electric pump that plumbs into a hole in the bottom of the trans(usually drain plug). it forces the fluid through the lines through the cooler then back into the fill plug. the electric pump is necessary because there is no internal pump as you would have in an automatic trans.

it's only needed for automatics. excessive heat causes trans fluid to break down extremely quick. after the fluid goes, it's only a matter of time before the trans gets tore up.
