This is what I was told by the owner of a local speed shop. He acknowledged that Mustang GTs need more torque but that gears were not the way to remedy this. He suggested a performance cam and LT headers. Lower gears, he said, are harder on the engine because they make it run at higher rpms. As you can see from my signature, I followed the collective wisdom of stanget and installed 4.10 gears. Did I make a mistake?

I do not think so I am no mechanic but the rpm thing I don't think is really true....yes on the highway your engine may cruising at a higher rpm but not enough to hurt I would not figure. What ever rearend gears you have if you drive like a madman.....the car is going to suffer with whatever gears. I see no validity there. I do agree with the L/T's that is a good bet.....the cam I guess but there are other things I would do before cam. I think cam would be more beneficial on a done up car than with a stock motor....but I do not know for sure but to get the most gains there are certain things that should be done before others I think the cam is one.....please correct me if wrong on this.

If his exact words were "performance cam", then that should tell you how much this guy knows about modular Mustangs.

Answer: jack ****

Find a new shop.

Yes, LT's are a very good mod. Cams are also a good mod, but definately expensive if you can't do the installation yourself.....actually the same can be said about the LT's.

I'm just wondering how many 4.10 posts can be in one 24hr period.

i bet you're running a little lean with the C&L maf and 75mm TB. i would've gone with accufabs 70mm TB with accufab plenum. none the less good mods.

oh.. and you made the right choice in gears

Find a new shop.

Actually, he said "custom cam" because his shop grinds their own cams. He also said that the stock cam favors the exhaust so a custom cam improves intake, even on a stock GT.

I don't have the C & L MAF. I have the C & L TrueFlow inlet pipe. But you are right, my car did run lean especially with the Diablo Predator performance tune.

I really like my 4.10 gears. Definitely a great mod for the cost. The comments of this speed shop owner, however, made me a little nervous.

Personally, I'd go with VT's cams. Proven dyno and track gains, and great customer support from what I've heard.

I had a Mustang speed shop install my 4.10's. They too recomended 3.73's for the GT's. But, they did not balk at the 4.10's. To be honest, 3.73's are a better all around gear, and I would have gone with them if my car was a daily driver.

First of all, you should NEVAR go back to that "performance shop". You have had an encounter with what I liked to call "an uninformed imbacile"

He was correct that lower gear ratios do cause you to run at a lil bit higher RPM at the same speed, BUT it is rather insignificant until you reach 4.30's+.

Also, you have a MODULAR motor. They are designed to handle cruising at 2500 w/ NO problem, they actually like it. It puts them at a happy medium between their low end torque and upper end HP

I'd just go to another shop and get some 4.10's man

Also, for what its worth........

I've had 3.27's, 3.73's, and 4.10's in my AUTO N/A GT.....

I'm now running 4.30's, and I can drive the car anywhere I want, with no problems

And another thing, 5th gear is a waste of metal on a GT with stock gears. I never used that the thing. Now, with 4.10's, I use it all the time. So, in my case, I probably always ran at about 2500 on the Interstate.

My .02 - most cams make additional power from around 3,000 RPM + (just search for cams and dyno charts). How do you get into the powerband faster? Gears... I think if you're staying N/A 4.10's, or even 4.30's, are a great choice, especially with cams.

I know my cams/heads come on around 3K and continue to make additional power until redline. One other note - if 4.10's are harder on the motor, I can't see how breaking into the motor to install cams is any easier. It's all about how you drive the car and take care of it.

Maybe I should slap some 4.56 gears in my car and see what he says about that.

Can't you run higher rpms with aftermarket cams? Wouldn't this minimize the increased rpms of 4.10 gears?
