4:10 install Questions

I posted this in race tech but thought i would cover 4.6 to get more of a response.

I'm about to purchase some 4:10 gears. Does anyone have specific brand reccomendations? what should i pay for install? what do i need to make sure i have prior to install? (extra items) I appreciate all the help!

Oh yea, I am getting 4:10s cuz I think thats a happy medium between not enough gear and too much. What are your thoughts on this philosophy? Thanks again!

FRPP is the highly popular brand. I also recommend even OEM Ford.

Typical gear install takes about 4-6hrs. Depending on who's doing it so you can guage prices from there based on hourly charges.

Prior to the install, you need to make sure you have the gear set. Inside, there should be a ring gear, pinion gear, pinion nut, crush sleeve, and some shims. In addition to this, you'll need 2qts. of rear differential fluid and a 4oz. bottle of friction modifier.

As for 4.10's, I think they're a good gear ratio, especially for n/a cars. If you're going boosted in the future, you might want to consider something less, like 3.73's. Just my opinion.

great, thanks! :nice:

So far this is the list of what I need for install:
*4.10 Gears
*2 Qts of 75W140 rear differential fluid
*4oz bottle of friction modifier

also, someone said something about new master bearing kits for cars with higher mileage. I have close to 79,000 miles on my 99 so when i change gears do i need to purchase the master bearing kit too? I just want to make sure i got everything i need when i go to install.

I think that would be a good idea. If you want, you can get a full bearing and seal kit for a little over 100 dollars and it will basically replace every nut, shim, gasket, and bearing in the rear end for no worries. Contact Randy Stinchcomb over at www.modulardepot.com under the Ford Parts department. He can get you the stuff you need and probably cheaper than most on the internet.

On Fluid:
Many people use 75w-90 in thier rearends if you use Royal purple you don't need to add friction modifier.
I think that Redline already has FM as well
IMO i like the 75w90 oil I use it in my daily driven rearend with 4.10's moser axles and 31-spline t-lok. do a search on MD and corral and you will see alot of people happy with it, and being a lighter oil it makes your driveline slightly more efficient.

Use FRPP gear it is the same part number as OEM (except there are 2 diff part numbers of 3.73) but for all other 8.8's the gears are identical to stock.

FRPP 4.10's from www.stangstore .com -I paid $150 shipped

IT took me about 2.5 hours to do the install, and most of that was just cleaning stuff. It's really not that difficult esspecially if you use the master housing dimension method that the factory uses plus you don't need a pinion depth guage. All you need is a good dial caliper or micrometer 1-2" and a dial and magnetic base. DIY and save a few bucks. Don't forget locktite and RTV.
