I am thinking of putting 4:10's in my GT but I wanted to know if anyone had any info on how much the numbers improved. I have seen the videos and where the engine tachs at speed, but I just wanted to know if someone had a before and after 1/4 mile time. I have flowmasters on my car right now and that is it. I am going to the 75mm throttle boby and a CAI soon. I think I am gonna do the gears first. This is the second Mustang I have owned. I had a 1996 Cobra that I traded for a minivan (isn't marriage great!) but I have recently gotten this GT, and I think the Cobra spoiled me a little. I want this one to get up and go like the cobra. I didn't do many mods to the cobra (Bassani Offroad X-pipe/mil eliminators/Flowmasters) and I am trying to find out what the "best bang for the buck" will be. I know the gears will be the most noticable, but I would like some suggestions on where to go from there. Any help you guys (and girls) could lend would be greatly appreciated! Also the time difference if anyone has the numbers for a stock 2000 GT and then one with the 4:10's.

Thanks!!!!

Luke

Yes, marriage is great, especially when she lets you trade in the minivan for a GT! That's what I did in 2000!

My best completely-stock run was 14.5. I put in 4.10's and a diablo sport chip (you'll need that for the speedo recal), then had it dyno-tuned to adjust shift points. Now I'm running consistent 14.01...can't break into 13's yet! The dyno showed a 15hp increase after the chip & tune!

I'm still married, so full exhaust has been on the list, but not on the honey-do list!

Would I still need the chip if I have a 5 speed??? Also, what is a good price for installation? I could do it myself, but I don't have an air compressor, or a press for the pinion bearing. I called a guy today and he wanted 250 to install. The parts are only 200!!!! I know it is time consuming, but I just wanted to get ya'lls take on the price. Let me know if he is being fair or not. I tried to call the dealer, but they won't even touch it. (No Aftermarket Mods) Also, what was the difference in gas mileage from stock to 4:10's. I don't think it will sway my decision, but I would like to know how much was lost. Thanks for all the help!!! :flag:

I don't have any before and after times for you, but with traction and good shifting you'll improve your times around a few tenth's. Plus the feel of the car is so much better. $250 sounds reasonable for install.

Same as me, 2002 Auto stock times 14.5 ..... after gears 14.0
60' times went from 2.3 to 2.1

Look at subframe connectors a good set of DR's and some suspension work, you can pick up some good time there.

I just did mine a week ago and did a dyno run on before and after with the 4.10s and a coustom tune with the 93 oct. Stock my auto ran a 14.54 at 96 mph and had 200 rwh. After 14.13 at 98 and 219 rwh and I gained about 20 lbs of tq. I took it out and ran it and last night on stock tires and I pulled a 14.01 at 98.6 mph and tonight i ran a 13.99 at 99.7 mph:banana:
Im now in the 13 sec club lol.

Also gas is about the same as before as long as your not realy on it all the time. Which by the way was pretty hard at first and still sometimes is. I might have droped a mile a gallon nothin big. When your wot the gas seems to drop prety fast though.

Youll love them I promise. People with autos will like it alot more because I know I could never get my tires to chirp w/o the gears and tune and they sure do now.

$50 to install the parts when you subtract the price of the gears is a very good price. Even $250 to install the parts would be a good price. With different gears they have to be set just right and they have to track just right. It can be a very long process or you could hit it the first time. I think that at the shop I work at we charge like $400 (I don't set the prices) to swap gears because you can never get them just right on the first shot. We have had them take 2 days to get just right. You have to shim the pinion depth and the ring gear position when you get one right you throw the other off. But we like to do thinks right where I work though.

I have done gears before, but I had a facility to do them in last time. I don't have the right equipment to do it myself. I would much rather do it myself because that is half of the joy of owning a hotrod! I guess the $250 dollars will have to do for now. As far as the gas mileage goes, I am actually suprised. I thought I woiuld be losing alot more than that. I do have a heavy foot, but I'll try to restrain myself. 90% of my driving is 35 to 40 MPH anyways. I do get to 60 occasionally, but only for about 45 seconds on the freeway, and then I am at my exit. (Its nice to live close to work!)

Gears are excellent for city driving.

With a manual tranny what do I need for the speedo to be accurate. Will I need a chip, or just one of those cable gears? Also, does anyone know if they make a shim kit specifically for switching to 4:10's The only time I have been into a rear end was on a 91 Camaro, and shimming the pinion bearing was a major pain in my posterior. Shimming the carrier wasn't that bad, but taking the pinion gear on and off was a pain. If there were such a kit I would just do the work myself, but running back and forth to machine shop to add shims would be a pain in the rear. Anybody got any ideas? :flag:

For a 2000 GT, you'll need a chip or handheld programmer - cant do a speedo gear chg on this year. Ford sells a shim kit, but honestly, $250 is a good price and well worth it.
