4.10s finally installed

had Classic Performance Repair (CPR) install my gears yesterday. They mostly do work on older mustangs. It was the first time they did a gear install on an 05+mustang, but the have done gear install on 8.8 rear ends; nonetheless, they are meticulous and ensure everything is just right. I have not had a chance to really test the gears yet, but from what I can tell it will be an improvement. No gear whine to speak of.

Shouldn't be a difference in the way the parts go in as the only difference I've heard of between the S197 8.8s and the prior ones are that our clutch packs are different material which has caused the whine.
Hopefully you will enjoy them as much as I have

He said installing gears on mine was not too much different than installing gears on older models. There are some extra parts that need to be removed on the 05+ models. He said next gear install on an S197 he is going to charge a little more.

According to the butt dyno, it is an improvement over the stock 3.55. Down-shifting to 3rd at hwy speeds will pin you back to your seats, down-shifting to 3rd might be too much stress on the engine. I have not really notice a dif. in gas mileage.

How much did you pay? I was quoted $625 including parts, labor, and tax.

I paid $609. $211 for the gears, $90 for the install kit, and $308 for the install.

So it seems if that's about normal. What are RPMs at 70 mph? 2500?

thats pretty close i think.I love my 4.10's but i would have loved 4.30's a little more.I cruise all day(when theres no traffic) at about 80 and its under 3000 rpm.

Yep. Parts are the same, but there are definitely some differences. The guy that did them for me in the '05 had the car for 4 days (he was doing this on the side). He'd done hundreds of 8.8's and never had that kind of trouble. But he wanted to make sure they were whine free. I can't imagine pulling it apart as many times as he did.

When I finally get some gears for my '07, I'm going to make sure to go to someone that has done S197's before. I'm too impatient to wait that long.

It took him about 5.5 hrs to do it. He kept getting interrupted with phone calls.

That's not bad irregardless of the phone call interruptions. Anyone know if there any rear end girdles that will fit without having to relocated the panhard bar? I'm using the Adj. Panhard Bar.

The FRPP one is supposed to fit without modification, according to Ford Racing.

The LPW girdle is $50 less and also fits without relocation. It appears to be slimmer than the FRPP piece.

I am going to do a 4.10 install.

My have a concern. How will my traction be using 9 inch wheels rather than 10 in the rear? I am using 255/45/18 tires in the front/rear.

What do ya'll think?

Depending on your tires, traction should not be issue. My tires are a smaller diameter 245/45/17 and they seem to hook fine. I took the car to the 1/8 mile strip on Sunday and I cut my 60' time down by 2-4 tenths. Of course it could also be I have a little more practice at launching, but still have a ways to go.
