4.10's, what are carrier bearings?

I having my 4.10's put in as I type this. The mechanic called me and said that the install kit I supplied didn't come with carrier bearings and he replaces these as a matter of procedure so he will be picking up these for me. He also had to get the left ABS sensor since it got damaged on the way out. The right one came out ok.

Anyway, what do the bearing do that he is replacing? I'm quite anxious to drive it tomorrow!

the carrier shims go on eah side of the diff... right by the bearing caps...They are use to adjust the backlash so you dont have any whining or complications after install

they are the bearing that go on your differential.

In the rear end there are two bearings on the carrier, two bearings at the pinion, and one on each axle. replacing them usually depends on milage. I replaced them all when I did my rear end just for piece of mind.

the abs rings are cast iron so I have heard they can break when removing. I got mine off okay which suprised me becaus I am always captain overkill on stuff like that so i figured I would break them both.

he is talking about the bearings not the shims.

ooops misread the post yeah they are what go on the carrier itself and the races are held by the bearing caps which are TQ to 85 ft/lbs. and are directional

You guys both agree that he should be replacing them while its open then? It sounds logical to me and he is a very reputable mechanic in doing gear work. I'm glad I already own the XCal 2 so I can reprogram and hit the road!

how many miles are on the car? most poeple kind of just use milage as a guide as weather or not to replace bearings.

that being said if you milage is low most likely you could re-use them. In my case I was replacing the carrier so it was a no brainer to me. that way I did not have to pull the old bearings. get new bearing and have a easier job.

the bottom line here to me is the guy you chose to do the install thinks it is the way to go. if you try to make him do it your way it is probably going to piss him off and if there is a problem he could always pull that card so I would just do it.

I think that if he feels strongly about replacing them that means he probably knows what he is doing so I say let him go at it.

I'd look at them as preventative maintenance (assuming the old ones have a few miles on them). It's like changing a water pump on a t-belt driven car when you're in there doing the belt. Since you're in that far you might as well go ahead and replace it even if it isn't bad yet. It could save you trouble later on...

i agree with hognutz, depends on the mileage i really dont replace them unless the car car alot of mileage or is X amount of years

I have 55,000 miles now. I'm sure he is doing me a favor. I was just curious more than anything really. I thought I had picked up the proper install kit when I bought the gears. There were 3 to choose from. No big deal. I picked up the SVO girdle too. It should look sweet.

I would replace all the bearings in the rearend, He's in there might as well do it right.

And it doesnt matter how many miles are on the car, if you bought it used you have no idea how much the pre-owner beat-up on it.
