I have an 01GT 5 speed with 3.27's and im looking to upgrade. Could use some opinions on gears from you guys.. I do some highway driving and am not really concerned with fuel mileage due to only driving the car 2 or 3 times a week.

Thanks guys

I have 3.73's in my 01 5spd. They are very friendly on the highway, so if you don't drive much I would go right for 4.10's or 4.30's. There isn't much different between those two gears.

What are your plans for the car? I drove daily with 4.30s but I did so because I was trying to get every ouce of ET out of the car at the track on slicks. If it wasn't for that I probably would have stuck to 4.10s because without a serious tire you won't be able to keep the power to the ground.

There are a few things that you should consider when choosing gears...

1. What is your ultimate goal with the car? DD, weekend warrior, dedicated race car?

2. What type of power do you plan to make? If you intend to stay NA, I would say to go with a 4.30 set. If you plan on doing a bolt-on car with heads and cams you may want to go with 4.10. If you will be building for a power adder (N20, turbo, supercharger) then go with 3.55, 3.73 or even 3.90

3. What size (diameter) tire will you be running? This will effect your final drive ratio.

I have a set of 4.30 gears that I have been running for almost 3 years. This is my daily driver and I commute 130 miles 5 days a week. I bring it to the drag strip once in a while and I currently run a 245/45/17 tire in the rear (stockers FTL). I have no regrets running NA. I trap at 110 @ about 5600-5700 RPM at the track. With the nitrous, that is another story...

Define "fun."

Is fun eeking every last hundreth of a second of E/T out of the car at the drag strip on the weekends?

Or is fun cruising around town, going to meets, and an occasional test and tune?

If you see yourself getting competitive with the car on a dedicated track tire, I'd say get the 4.30s.

If you think you're mostly going to street drive the car, on regular street rubber, the 4.10s are more than adequate and will be a vast improvement over the stock gears.

When my buddy and I went to the shop (Mustang only shop) to get our gears installed, he actually went WITH 4.30's, and the shop talked him out of it and he stuck w/ 4.10's. As said, it's not that much of a difference, but 4.10's should be enough.

4.10's, unless you want to run out of 4th gear at or under 100mph on the stock rev limiter.

With 4.10's I can light the rears up at ANY point in 1st and 2nd gear, and spin a little bit into 3rd on a good shift.

The daughter has 3.73, the wife 4.10 & I have 4.33. Just keep in mind, 1st gear is a very low ratio, so with 4.10 and lower, you will be out of 1st gear before you know it. Also, just FYI, Ford Racing gears set-up easier and are quieter than aftermarket gears, if that matters to you.

Theres no doubt i'd use FRPP stuff. I heard from a few different speed shops here locally that 9 out of 10 times FRPP uses whatever pinion shim is already in the car.

Thats not accurate at all. On my 04 I had, 4.30 gears, 26 inch tire, 108 is where I hit the factory limiter in fourth. (5 speed car). So you can get well above 100mph with 4.30s. Just don't plan on any real power adders.... maybe a small shot of n2o.

x2

26" tire, 4.30 gear in 4th gear will top out at 108-109 MPH.
26" tire, 4.10 gear in 4th gear will top out at 114 MPH.
