I have a 86 GT, that has manual windows and manual locks. I would like to change this to power locks and windows. I would like to do so without changing the doors. Is this possible? I know I have to get panels, but will I have to do thing like change the fusebox, bigger alt....lots of re-wiring?

Also I would like to do a t5 swap in the car. Will the 86 support tranny's out of the 87-93 years?

Any advice on either is greatly appreicated.

i know its your car and you should do what you want with it...but it seems almost sacrilege to add power windows to a no-option car. get ready to replace window motors regularly. you will likely have to swap the whole door...theres alot of window gear in there. what color is your car? i'll swap doors with you

yes you can use a t5 on your 86.

I don't have a problem w/ making the windows and locks powered, but I really don't think it'll be worth your time or your frustration. There's SO much that would need to be done. The motor, mounting, wiring, and I think even the glass is different (don't quote me on that) and THEN you've gotta do all the stuff in the dash and the fuses...man, thats one helluva project.

and the radio? all factory radio's suck....ditch it!

oh yeah that radio is out of there. I am going to look around at the JY and see what all makes up the power options. Seems to me Ford would have had all the stuff there in the car to do it. Just disabled or not in use. Like the fuse box. Mayb just have a block in the fuse where the power options would have been, But we all know ford doesnt always do the obvious which is what brings me here.

You just need to swap out the window regulators. A few rivets and/or bolts and its out. Definately not worth swapping complete doors. That would be senseless considering youd have to repaint the doors, blend the car to match and do any bodywork they might need.
You will need power window arm rests though.

Ive had to swap doors on wrecked cars and change them from manual to power windows a few times and replace bad window motors. The wiring was already in the car for those though.
You will need to do something about the wiring. Id get a wiring diagram and see whats needed and if the wires are actually there (I dont think Fords are that way though).
Youre probably best off pulling the harnesses from a junkyard.

Your car is a 86 right? the wires should be in the fuse box, all you have to get is the window regulators, window motors, window and lock switches and lock motors and install it all and cut the holes for the window switches "they are pre-marked on the back of the door panel" What ya need to do is go to the junk yard and find a full power car and pull everything without cutting the wires, you'll have to get the wires that go from the drivers side door, into the fuse box and over into the passenger side door. Once you have it all befor you hack everything up in your car make sure you can get the wireing to work to turn the motors and pop the lock motors, once you have this down just drill the rivets for the window regulators and install the new one, and you'll have to drill a hole for the lock motor and install it and just make sure to run the wires on the inside of the door so everything will sit flush, it's sounds harder than it is. i just did the job on my convertible

Yea its really not as hard as everyone makes it out to be. Im not sure about the older cars but I changed mine over to power and if you have all the wiring from a donor car its really easy. Definately a one day job or take your time over two. But it is doable, but if you are gonna do it look up the thread that shows how to use the aftermarket door lock actuators, sounds like the stock ones aren't worth your time, and the retrofit is really easy.

Good Luck!
