4 lug tires VS 5.0L engine question.

Ok so in the future I'm planning on dropping a 5.0 replacing my 4 banger. I do have plans for a 8.8 rear, BUT do I need to upgrade the brakes to a 5 lug??? People say it will handle better but stopping is stopping, weither I'm going 120KM with a 4 banger or 120 KM with a 5.0L. Whats your opinion?

Thanks

5.0L come with 4 lug, just like the 4 bangers, so I don't know what they're talking about. Of course it would be optimal to go to 5 lug but neccessary? No.

I've seen some pretty powerful machines running on 4 lugs. I want to do the 5 lug in the future but that would mean all new brakes, wheels and tires. That's too much for me to deal with right now. Wheels and tires alone are at least 800 -1000 dollars plus the cost of the conversion.

where do you get 4 lug tires? J/K kiddin bud.

the rear brakes dont do much, compared to the fronts. tons of guys run 4 lug drums no probs.

my two cents.

Thanks for the input guys. I know the crap load of stuff to convert the 2.3 to 5.0 and now knowing that the brakes and wheels don't need to be upgraded will make this 5.0 dream seem a bit more realistic for me. THANKS

Oh you can upgrade the brakes with bigger 4-lug rotors and 73mm calipers, etc... but that's a whole lot cheaper than completely replacing them for sure.

to do it right, i think you need a different M/C.

Alex, here is some info from Matt et al, if you have not seen it:

Unless you run a crap load of HP, like 700+ (?)you won't break off the lugs. It would be a waste of money for me to move up to five lugs, just because I don't need them. There are lots of 4 lug upgrades out there.

I don't understand why a 2.3 EFI Celeberty (Pontiac I think, somewhere between late 80s, early 90s) have 5 lugs. I have looked at a lot of other car's lugs around our years, and it just doesn't make sence why Ford put four lugs on their sport car.

it is absolutely rediculous that any car equiped with a v8 has 4 lugs. but yes 4 lug is good enough.

after the wheels it is not expensive to convert and i feel it is a waste to further invest in fords mistake.

4 cyclinders had smaller rotors than 5.0's...so w/ the 5.0 in there, you have more weight and more power w/ the same braking as a 4 cyc. You don't need 5 lugs, that probably won't make much difference in actual stopping power as much as strength.

Like others said, you certainly could go w/ the larger calipers, etc. When choosing your 8.8, you might consider a turbocoupe rear end so you'd have rear disc brakes for cheap. The auto's had 3.73 gears and the manuals had 3.55's - so there's your gear upgrade too. I believe they might be .75 inches wider on each side, but i'm not sure. Tons of info is available on the rear disc swaps, etc on stangnet. Good luck.
