I noticed my headlights looked funny they other night. I got out and checked them and found it 3/4's full of water.

I did a search and only found reference to water droplets, but not to actual water.

anyways, I thought I would share. I am going to go drill a hole in it to let the water out, and try to figure out why so much water is getting inside of the housing.

any other suggestions?

ummm ya here's one!! dont drill a hole in it! that's just away for more water to get in! take it out! its only held in with 2 or 4 little bolts?! empty it out and find out why and how it got in there! geeez! did you use a power sprayer on it? or take it to a car wash ? or drive in really heavy rain? if so your gasket might be leaking or the light bulb isn't twisted all the way into the housing or the black plastic thing that holds it in and locks it in is loose or missing!

dont know why or how but mine do the exact same thing.. when my car does see seldom rain. I need to stop being cheap and buy some new headlights but just havent gotten around to it. Surprisingly my bulb never goes out.

I live in Oregon, so it rains heavy just about all winter.

hairy, I am a bit cheap to. I would not be worrying about it, except the bulb went out.

I will take it out and see what the seals look like.

Mine used to fill up to. I could put fish in there.


What i did was drill two holes on the UNDERSIDE of the headlight in the clear lens portion of the light. I drilled them where the plastic rolled under so i had to take the headlight out to do this.

As a result, the water drains out, and they no longer fogged up. Drove like this for 2 years

no your not dumb! that's code talk in the monkey family! you need to have 4" of monkey in you to understand! I'm sure one of them will be happy to put a little bit of monkey in you if you want to know! LOL the 4" thing refers to the title 4" of water in head light! LOL

I had that problem and got all the water out and ran a bead of sealant around the housing, fixed it for a short period of time but short kof buying new ones the drilled holes is probably your best bet.

Remove the lens assembly, it is mounted with 3 studs and nuts. Submerge the lens in a bucket of soapy water, and try to blow it up like a balloon. You won’t develop enough pressure using lung power to damage the lens, but you might find the leak. Some clear silicone sealer around the joint between the lens and the shell housing usually does the trick to fix most leaks.

He's right I have used that sealer for similar applications and it works great. Ford has a OEM black silicone sealer for the window glass thats awesome. Pick some of that up and follow Jrichker.

I had to drive to work tonight, so I pulled the housing, dumped it out and re-installed a new bulb.

I looked over the housing and cannot see a hole big enough to let that much water into the housing. It was two nuts to get out, I had to loosen the nuts on the blinker to slide it over enough to get the headlight back in.


Is there a way to take the lens off the headlight bucket itself? I found several studs, but no nuts. (that sounds dirty)

Simply take both headlights out of the car and take them inside to dry overnight. When they're dry, run a bead of clear silicone all the way round both of them on the seam where the lense meets the housing. Let the silicone cure and reinstall them when it is dry. Problem solved.

I have nothing technical to add to this thread. However i feel obligated to share a story and a pic:

That was the headlight of my buddy's '91 coupe. He bought it from some old guy. We got it home and was stripping the 2.3 out of it when we noticed water in the headlight. Upon further inspection we see this little guy swimming around in the light. Seriously. And he looked to be doing quite well for himself

I was contemplating buying some gold fish for mine. Except they would of froze solid tonight.
