hey guys i have a 92 mustang gt with the 5.0. i want to stroke it out, put alum heads and a cam. what parts/combo should i be looking at to get me in the 400hp range
 
I went the 347 all motor route. Not quite at the 400hp mark yet, got about 35hp to go but i'm about to do an intake and carb swap...might get a tad closer i hope. Remember that 400 at the wheels is around 460 at the crank if you have a 5 speed so you really need to build it right.
 
400hp is easy with a 347. Doesn't take high compression and can be done under the factory rev limiter.

I would use trrickflow fast as cast or afr 185/afr 185 comp heads with a holley, rpm II, tfs R or a victor manifold, custom cam from Ed Curtis @ Flowtech induction, 42lb injectors, 75-90mm tb, 80-90mm mass air, 1 3/4" longtubes. I just designed you an easy 425+ hp :)
 
Its funny how many people say they want a 400hp street motor and then when its all said and done they are happy with an explorer/cobra top end swap.

I'm with dontgivaratz. Go turbo and leave the rest stock.
 
for that amount of power, a 347 + a victor jr + a carb + the right HR + a set of TFS FAC 190s will do it all day long at under 11.0:1 compression at around 6000rpm. and if the cam is right itll drive great too.

and the dynamic cylinder pressure of a typical NA 347 is far less than that of a boosted stock motor (with the stock cam) which will make running on ****ty pump gas much easier with the 347.

ive dicked around with centrifical superchargers for the last 15 years and turbos for the last 12. the biggest thing about getting them to run and stay together is engine management. if you cant spend a lot of time on a laptop tuning to get it right you will be fighting a loosing battle, or it wont make the power and wont run as good as it should.

Since you're looking for 400rwhp (460 crank), you'll need either forced induction on a 302 or a N/A 347. The latter will need to make peak HP at ~6000rpm and spin safely to 6500rpm so you'll need a combo that'll get you there:

347 stroker, 10.5:1 CR
TFS 190cc FAC heads
CompCams XE276HR-12 cam
TFS R-series intake
30lb injectors
1.7 roller rockers
75mm TB with 76-80mm MAF
1-3/4" long tube headers
Dyno tune

Scott as you can see by the posts above , there is no clear answer. That is the beauty of the Mustang, so many way to get what you want. it really depends on what you want, muscle or forced induction, small or large cubes, carb or efi, what your budget is, mechanical skill etc.....
 
mostly on budget, everything else follows after. To be done right a 400hp combo will run 4-5k.Then you have to do all the supporting mods to the driveline and suspension.
 
guess i should come clean, the engine is for a customer of mine. ive built many SB and BB Chevys, fords, and mopars including a 472 Hemi. but they were all old school carbed engines. ive never done a efi engine before. my customer wants to build a stroker and wants around 400hp thats all he told me. the guy has a lot of money but if i can keep the total motor build (including machine work) at or around $5-6k i think he will be happy. so, i know he wants a stroker, heads, and a cam for sure. looks like a intake change is in order too. i am also going to have a t-5 built to spec ones the motor is dyno'd as far as the rear end he never said anyting about it. i dont know if its already done or what
