Hey guys,
I'm currently considering buying a 429 out of a '72 Thunderbird to put into my 67 fastback...

Will this motor fit properly? Are there any major downfalls to it? I've seen plenty of 427 and 428 projects, but I can't remember seeing any 429's... mainly due to the fact that they weren't around in 67...

What parts would I need to buy to install it?? IE: cylinder head change??

I know I'd need to buy new motor mounts, headers, etc..

My car came with a 289 that I pulled. I plan on upgrading the rear end to a 9"... with a big block I suppose I'd need the 31 spline axles..

I swapped my old 3 speed tranny for a 4 speed wide ratio... it's a 28 spline output shaft. So would I then need to swap out the output shaft in the tranny to a 31 spline to mate with the rear axle? I'm lost on that one.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated,
-Tim

-ps-I'm looking for some straight facts as well, like what HP it came with.

Hmm.. I've done a little bit of research on google... and it seems like the 429 had no b@lls....

215hp or somethin' like that. Out of a 429!??!

It might just be more of a PITA than a jaw-dropper.

I have a '72 429 in my 67. It has plenty of muscle. Don't forget that in 72 they started measuring net HP. So numbers were down on all cars. Look at my signature for an example of 429 power.

It is a tight squeeze to get it in the car so consider a R&P and shock tower delete to create some extra room. You will have to go with electric fans and headers are questionable but there are some out there.

And I don't need a 'Go Baby Go' button to make that kind of power.

Do you have any pics of your engine setup?

What are the specs on your motor?? I'm assuming you've modded it to get 370+hp...

You're not using headers? What exhaust manifolds are you using then? I doubt I can use the Thunderbird ones...

What are you using for suspension to keep that baby up?

-Tim

-ps- nice line on that second post, lol

429/460 (385 series) is a different motor than the FE series (352, 390, 427, 428), it is a little bigger in exterior dimensions.

El: Lets see...complete rebuild, bored 0.030, decked the block adn heads 0.010, port and polished the heads, new pistons and rods, reground the crank, everything was balanced, bigger cam, solid lifters, Holley 750, stock exhaust manifolds, currently an edelbrock performer manifold (stock manifold on the dyno), dual point ignition; have since added a windage tray and 8qt pan. Plan to switch to MSD type ignition, X pipe, stealth or air gap intake and 800+ dp carb.

I had the GT suspension, but have since gone to 620# springs and KYB shocks.

Hey Fos: FYI, most of those blue wires in the picture are connected to a remote starter switch.

What do you think of a 393 TT or should it be an S trim supercharged?

Just a little hint of an upcomming project.

Go with the blower. Personally I don't like Turbos on muscle cars...too z-car-ish (read: ricey)

El: Did you get your questions answered?

Just think; I am trying to find a low rise dual quad intake that will not hit the hood. Old school horsepower!!

Supercharger it is and what do you know I have one already. LOL

Just gave a guy an offer on a rotating assembly. Yay Know where I can find some low compression forged pistons for a 302?

I'll pick up the lentech aod sometime this week.

Then you ask why I can't get my fastback done. Funny thing is that it's exactly in the same way you last saw it. DOOH!

Is your car out of the paint booth?

El. Why go with so much weight in the front? The car will not handle well! Unless you're talking about an aluminum BB...

Go with a small block. You can easily get 500hp out of a Windsor with aluminum heads and it will still be nimble...

67 Thats a lot of torque for that amount of HP. Kinda like a turbo diesel... Must be a monster off the line!

Fos. When you gonna pony up a completed 4.6. I gots ta see some pics...
