460 SWAP/over heating

Sorry if this is a repeat question, but I am new to this. I bought a unfinished 1990 convertiable with a 460/C6. i drove it for the first time the other day and you could of fried a eggs and bacon on the motor it got so hot. It has a aluminum radiator and high flow alum water pump, electric fan. I know the fan is to small and it does not have a shround. I'm sure there is some one out there that has fixed this problem. Ive looked at several fans but did not want to buy one that does not pull enough CFM. Can any one recommend a fan that is not $500 that will work. Thanks for your help!!

Ford Contour/ Mercury Mystique V6 fan. It fits nice and pulls a lot of air. I forgot to mention it was $30 at the junk yard.

How quickly did it get hot, and was that while driving or sitting in traffic?

take some measurements of the radiator and head over to the pick a part or junk yard.

there are tons of nice fans w/ shrouds for 40 bux. 2001 stratos fans work well taurus fans you name it

Thanks for all the info. I have tried the junk yard but cant find a fan that fits. My radiator measures 26" W x 17" H. I found a fan on ebay but its a no name china fan, I'm kinda scared of it. Just trying to get some info on what others have done. One more thing, is there a preffered thermostat> I have ran a 160 to 190 and cant tell a difference. WLDHRSE, it was will driving. Keep the suggestions coming. Thanks!!!

460's fit fine in a fox. A 4.6 is physically larger (outside) than a 460. People generally don't do it anymore because it's so easy to make sick power with a small block. I have a 460 in my Capri.

If your running hot while driving, electric fans are not the problem and will do nothing to correct it. Your radiator is too small and/or blocked, or your water pump or thermostat is failing.

Where did the radiator come from?

im aware of all that, im just astonished anyone would put that boat anchor up front of a fox

Mostly just to be different. It's a helluva lot easier, more comfortable, and cheaper to go 11's/12's with a small block.

Of course if you want to run an 800HP n/a car, 500+ cubes of BBF is a great way to go!

meh i'll run 800hp boosted on a 347 and not have to rebuild my engine every 10k miles

Where did the radiator come from?

Not sure were it came from. I bought the car un finished and its been through 2 other owners before me, I just finished it. Its new and Im sure the size is not the problem. Not sure what size t-stat needs to be in it. I bought the car because of what all has been done to it and how it was done, there was very little expense spared. I have a shoe box that has a little over $8500 worth of reciets for a unfinished car.

I would check to see if the water pump and t-stat are working..While the car is cold take the radiator cap off let the car idle,so you see the antifreeze drop...you do have antifreeze in the car? I hope its not just water?...When the water drops you can give it a little gas you will see the water drop even more that way you can tell the T-stat is open and the water pump is circulating..I hope this helps..Oh yeah post up some pics of the car Would love to see a fox with a 460 in it....

I've done all that, and yeah its got anti freeze. I have to admit I've been a chevy guy all my life and this is my first ford, I've jumped the fence and dont know that much on the tweeks. I'm thinking it may just be the t-stat. Its only got a 160 deg and some one told me to go with a 190 or a 195 deg. Any one got any suggestions on that? As far as pics, I'm still trying to figure out how this site works, if I can get some pics on I will.

Back in the day, I never ran t-stats in carbed street motors. They do help keep the engine at a consistant temp which is better for tuning. It's much more important now in EFI motors. I would just yank the t-stat and see if that fixes the problem. That will let ya know if the t-stat is bad, and if it is, you can then decide if you want to replace it. Check the flow in the radiator also. Shouldn't be too hard to come up with the cause.
