460 swap

im just curious is there anyway to put a 460 in a 2000 gt without swapping to a fox style k frame and if so what r the problems to look for? thxs ohh and on a stock 460 i no the t45 isnt up to par for torque but do they make a trans adapter plate for this application.

1. Whats wrong with the powerplant thats in the car now?

2. If there is something wrong with the powerplant in it now, FIX IT

3. Instead of investing all the money in a 385 series engine, trans, custom DS, Adaption parts, carb thats going to cause u to LOSE streetablilty and gas mileage from where you are now.....put a blower on the thing and be done.

My knowledge on it is that its not cost effective but.......

You have to put a 5.0 style k member in it, adapter headers, put a c6/c4 in, custom drive shaft, custom exhaust, and unless you have aftermarket, HCI on the engine its not going to make as much power as the forced induction 4.6. A460 heads alone are probably going to put you close to 2k in the hole or trickflow has a set now that is pretty nice. The t45 can take alot more than you think in factory form and you can always build it but im unaware of any kind of adaption parts to a 385 series engine. Plan on dumping large sums of money to get that project rolling. Not trying to be critical just dont want to see you spend 5k and end up with the same or less power and alot less driveablity than what you would spending 3,400 on a blower setup and tune

i appreciate your input. i was thinking bout using stock manifolds instead of headers and carbs are no prob i got a couple demon carbs sittin around from a previous project. as for wiring it was just gonna be basic essentiuals nuthin fancy. only concern for me was i wanted a 4 or 5 speed hook up. only thing i got is what is in the gt or 2 old saginaw 4 speeds from a buick special i have. justwanted sumthin i could say i made up. nuthin special just a big engine simple hotrod. k frame i can get pretty easy and cheap. only thing i can be out of pocket for are motor mounts fuel regulator and im pretty sure i could just have a yoke changed to work for the driveshaft. that and a clutch. everything else would just be stock but i think it would be an awesome car once done.

You will need to put a 94/95 K member in. I highly doubt anyone makes an adapter plate for the T45. I wouldnt be surprised if you couldnt find a bell housing to put a T56 or some sort of Tremec behind it tho. Get some fox body headers for a big block. You will have to modify them a little to make them work, but shouldnt be to much of an issue. If you dont want to convert over to manual brakes and steering, you will have to fab up a bracket to mount your power steering pump to that 460.

I think it would be badass if you did it. Take your time with the 460 tho. Do a stroker build!!! Put some A460 heads on it, a good intake, a good cam, and a good carb. It will surprise you at how much power it makes. I have a friend right now with a coupe with a stock block 460 that has been stroked out to well over 500 cubic inches. It's insane at how much power it makes, but he has more money tied up in it than I am willing to bet you want to spend on yours.

yeah im kinda like a backyard builder but i can get my hands on a 460 with the 427 heads and rods. i can get cams and valve train parts fairly cheap. got a dealer friend who gets great prices on things. i just want a stick car. any suggestions on that

A dressed 460 weighs over 700 pounds, 200-250 more than a 4.6 and would really make the chassis feel nosy-heavy and it'd handle like ****.

If you want BB torque and a semblance of decent handling, just put a twinscrew on the modular: It'd be a lot cheaper than cobbling together all the bits needed to make a 460 swap work...

If you just want to be "different", well, good luck.

427 heads and rods or anything FE isnt compatable with 385 series stuff

I just don't understand why the first reply here on Stangnet to anybody that wants to do something different is "don't do it, just put on a [fill in the blank] it's cheaper"...

hot rodding isn't about cheaper, it's about having fun and working on your car...I get that the only tool in some people's tool box is a credit card, but some of us like to work on cars for relaxation and enjoyment. And sometimes doing something that doesn't make any sense is the most fun...

anyway, a 460 powered 2000 shouldn't be a huge deal, the Fox/460 stuff should work with very little modifications and when you're done you'll have something unique and probably stupid fun to drive

Its honestly just bass ackwards to me! Sorry guys....just going off my own experience. He later went on to explain he has all the stuff just laying around so it makes more sense to me. I have built several cars ... 385 series/fe/small block and modular so i know all avenues and have tried most. If this is a car that he plans on driving at his own pleasure and a track wolf then by all means a 460 might be the best way to go! Honestly I think a stroked windsor would give him even BETTER results so there is no right or wrong avenue of venture. I have driven a 429 powered new edge and it was a blast but DRASTICALLY reduced the handeling of the car.

The problem that I have with these swap threads is the OP never seems to give any insight into their plans, wishes, expectations, expertise, and most importantly, resources ($$).

A thread like this gets opened and we never really know if the OP is thinging this is like putting a 351W into a 60's Mustang. IE, a straight forward swap. Just drop between the rails. A few special brackets and off you go.

The OP doesn't pass along how they expect the car to drive and operate. For example, do they expect the car to drive like the modern version or are they happy with a race style toggle switch dash?

It does make a difference if the goal is to make a car with "stock" like street manners, "stock" like operation, and "stock" reliability.

Do they expect the car to start when it's 20 degrees outside or only when the weather is warm enough for racing?

For a modern Mustang there are engine swaps that are straight forward and can be done by the home mechanic.

There are other swaps that would require the services of a full blown custom shop and Electrical expert.

What kind of swap are you expecting?

My take on it is that variety is always cooler than similarity. Who cares if it's harder, more expensive, or whether its more or less efficient?

I've been to a few shows now as a participant, and have been to several as an enthusiast. Lift the hood on a 99-04 mustang that has only standard mods, hell even a S/C or turbo and watch the people stream by w/o even as much as a turned up nose.

Throw a 335, or FE or 385 series under the hood, and people notice the difference. Its gonna be harder than putting a turbo on it for sure, but IT gets my vote.

I'm the guy that for the sake of being different, put a 2v in a fox. Then carb'd it, got rid of the pwr brakes, ans P/S. It's neither popular, or efficient but to me it's different, and it looks cool, and that's what it's all about.

As far as addressing the OP, what will be real different, is getting 427 heads and rods to fit in/on a 460???

honestly i just think it would be cool to have a big displacement motor in a car that looks like it should have it. im not lookin for high horse or fast track times im just lookin outta the box. like sumone said already ive seen the turboed and supercharged stangs and they are impressive but around here ive not seen an old style motor in anything but which it came in. yeah ive seen fox bodies with 351s instead of the 302 that came in it. ive even seen a fox with a 390 in it. but never a 400ci or bigger engine. i found a bellhousing on summit to hook up a t5 to a 460 for 500 bucks. i have 3 stangs just lyin around. a 70 coupe an old 4 banger and my 2000gt which im havin probs gettin straightened out with the mark8 motor i put in it. i had to order a new intake for it today instead of the factory 94 that it had. could get the air intake to work out so i got the newer style mark 8 intake. throttle body on the side instead of back. i should be able to hook up my maf and all that goodness now. hopefully that straightens it all out. if not then its a 460 project. and ive heard you dont have to change the k frame out. the gt has a slotted frame anyways which allows you to adjust for the motor mounts made to swap from the 5.0 to the 460. thats just what ive been told. and im curious ive read 3 different specs but a 2000 gt? does it come factory with a t45 or a 3650. i didnt check when i took it all out but im pretty sure my trans said tremec on it and i no my buddies 96 gt didnt have a tremec but sumother 5 speed.

I mean this it the nicest way possible but, I just get the feeling the OP doesnt know EXACTLY what he is getting into....for example, he talks about putting FE parts on 385 series engine...

im not sure i have said anything about fe parts on the 385. to be honest i dont even no what that means. all i know is i found a 460 in a 90's motor home. i have an old lincoln from the 70s with a 460 in it. as for puttin the thing together yeah its a lil new to me makin it work but thats my call. i have the TIME and the RESOURCES. being single and prior military has its benefits. but i have the drive and basic mechanical skills to make it work however i need it to. im not a picky guy. the more gauges and switches on panels in my car the happier i am. just makes it a hotrod to me. if anyone else thinks it gotty or sloppy irdgaf its mine lol. but thxs to the world wide web and people like that are on this website there is a market for such things like this and the parts are out there. like the trans adapter for the t5 to the 460. and im sure parts can be integrated to operate.

FYI Ford 427's along with 352's, 390's, 428's are "FE engines", and the 429 and 460 are "385 series"

well lol then ive mistaken the 427 for the 429 heads and rods. supposobly they made 460s with 429 heads and fordged internals. or so ive been told. it really doesnt matter to me just have the op to get one and the guy said it had that setup.
