4cyl tach

Has anyone used a 4cyl tach with a 302? Ive read somewhere that they either read double or half as fast i cant remember which....There has to be a cheap fix for this. Anyways im going to be hooking mine up even if it reads wrong, but where does the 4cyl tach hook up originally?

some OEM tachs have a switch on the back which one can toggle for different configurations. not sure about Ford's gauges though.......

i have heard that the ford gauge has that but isn't aren't the redlines different. it reads double, i have an aftermarket one hooked up as well and it reads 2000 while the stock one has 4000

The older Fords had that switch search for the year but mine is an 89 and doesn't have the switch. Best bet is to get an aftermarket tach, even if it's a cheap brand. I'm just trying to figure out a way to get rid of the factory tach before I put in an aftermarket one. I don't like having 2 tachs in the car it looks cheesy IMO.

I'd describe that as reading half, not double. Just me.

You'd be much better off simply buying the tach out of a junked 5.0L car. There's no market for them, so you ought to be able to get one cheap.

My 85 gt i had did have the differant tach switch. All u did is take the cover off the gauges and u should see it. If i remember right.

Does the 4 cyl dual plug engine tach read off only 4 plugs or all 8?

86 and older should have switch , newer cars will have to change the in dash tach ......

well this is a 91' that doesnt have the switch... can anyone tell me where the tach hooked to the 4 cyl orignially?

i meant that the 2.3 tach would read double than the aftermarket tach. the stock one would be at 4000 while the aftermarket would be a 2000, it could go either way i guess.

1991 Mustang - 4 cyl runs off EEC module
8 cyl runs off coil
According to the shop manual, anyway.
Pinouts on the IP connector are the same.
Pin 11 is the active pin picking up from the coil for 8 cyl and pin 6 of the dis. module for the 4 cyl.

An easy fix would be to run down to the local junk yard and get a 5.0 tack. If i recall there are about 2 billion stangs in the junk yards so im sure you wont have trouble finding one. Usually the j yards will work with the price and its alot easier to have the right tack then to try to mess with it to get it to work.
