4cyl. to 5.0 question

I want to drop in a 5.0 in my little 4banger 91 mustang. and i was wondering what the price range of the Engine and New Transmision would cost.
Would it just be cheaper to go out and buy a 5.0 Mustang?

well i'm not sure what kinda money you have to spend.. but here is what i know. Here in canada you can get a rebuilt 5.0L engine for around 1000 bucks. thats candian funds of course. I bought a rebuilt world class t-5 for 600 bucks. i bought a lot of used t-5's for around 300 bucks. as for new stuff i guess look at prices in jegs or summit cataloge for tranny's and maybe give rick 91gt a car about a new engine.

aas far as i know you would need new motor mounts, new ECU, the enigne and trans. maybe new trans mounts.

theres a nice 5.0 with a tranny on it for 650 on ebay

It depends on a few things, your mechanical ability, funds and if your 4cyl stang is in really, really good condition. Otherwise I would sell your 4cyl and buy a 5.0.

I did do the 5.0 swap on my car because it is a coupe and is in good condition.

I paid about $1,500 total for parts which included my donor car but there were other things I had to track down. I also have been working on cars for about 15 years as a hobby and had done this sort of thing before.

Usually you will have to do the brake lines, fuel lines, engine, transmission, rear end, computer/wiring harness. There are other smaller things that might come up such as different e-brake cables & routing, different year engine harnesses, and other sensors that vary slightly between years.

You can get away with not doing the suspension and brakes but its not recommended, the front of the car will bounce more and you have the stopping power with the larger brakes that come on the 5.0 cars.

probably cheaper to buy a 5.0 to be honest... But if you plan on putting some money into it... then why not? You will need to remember there are alot of differences besides the motor and tranny... including the exhaust, computer, rear end, driveshaft, springs, front spindles, brake lines, fuel lines, fuel pump, brake booster+MC, gauges, tranny mount, sway bars, ...and probably more that i have forgotten to list... I have personally gone through with this swap and its a hell of a project if your not highly mechanical. If you plan on doing it i'd go for a donor car also... It will save you many times throughout the swap. During my swap I decided to do springs, shocks/struts, 5 lug swap, new rear control arms, and radiator... plus numberous other small things. It will add up quick, but if you want to learn alot about your car then feel free to tackle it just remember to plan for your car to be off the road for a decent amount of time as this takes a bit to do.
