alright, well my parents are selling there house, and they are getting a lot more then they expected for it. so they're going on a spending spree, and I somehow convinced them I need a new engine for my car. the engine does have about 150k on it, so it has seen better days. Now here's my question, how hard is swapping a 4v engine out of a mach 1 into my 98gt. will the t45 tranny match up? could I use the stock headers from the 98gt? what about the fuel system? will the 98gt pump be able to support the mach 1 engine? I have about 2 months to plan this out, and I doing the swap myself, so i need to get as much info as possible. Also if anyone has any links on this subject send them my way.

you will have to use either OEM exhasut manifolds for a Mach 1, or else use CARB EO'd exhaust manifolds for a Mach 1. the catalytic converters still have to remain stock, no legal replacements for 4.6L stangs in CA. you will have to use OEM Mach 1 catalytic converters. also the computer will have to be from a Mach 1. teh fuel system will have to be a returnless style fuel system, and you cannot modify it at all. any other parts you have, such as a cold air kit, will have to be CARB EOd for a Mach 1.

so this would mean I would have to replace the entire exhaust system? or will the 98 h-pipe match up to the mach 1 exhaust manifold. I really want to have a 4v in my car, but I can only go so far to make it work. would it make more sense to just rebuild the engine I have now with p&p p.i. heads and cams? and maybe stroke it to a 302? I'm not looking for a cobra eating beast, I just want some reliable power, and be able to hang with ls1's

you have to use a MAch 1 h pipe. a 302 swap would be highly illegal. it was never offered in a mustang in 98, and before someone says a saleen s351 swap, its not legal.

i would suggest either building a wicked 2v. you cant us a bullitt intake manifold, you would have to convert to a 99+ fuel system, and the ford racing intake manifold isnt CARB EO'd. you will have to still use a plastic intake.

if you wanted to swap in a 98 4v motor, that would be legal, however you would still need OEM 98 cobra catalytic converters.

^ Cal shouldnt be allowed to do that LOL.That crap is RETARDED. TOO many stinkin tree huggers. Hey, while we are on this subject, with my exhaust would I be able to drive into cali if I needed to visit someone for a day or 2?or would they say, " sorry even though your an American citizen and live in 'The land of the free' your not allowed in this state with that car...LOL that would be pretty jacked up.

well, it wouldent be legal, but I've driven with an o/r pipe on my car for a year now, with no problems from the police. I did have to swap my cats back in for smog tho, but I don't have to do that again for another 2years.

you might freak out the smog tech if yuo do the 4v swap. they can send you to a referee station. i work for a referee in SB. they will go through and make sure everything is legal. i know i have failed a 96 GT for having a 03 cobra motor. he still had a return style fuel system, and also had long tubes with a catted H pipe, not legal in CA.

I thought it was the law to have cats on your car no matter what state your in.
yes it is. it is against federal law to remove cataytic converters. its up to the states to enforce the law though.

CA is different in that we require you to keep your OEM cats if it is a 96+ car. there are some EO'd 96+ cats, however there are none EO'd for a 4.6L mustang. also you have to keep all the cats, you cant run just 2 cats if your car had 4, and you cant run 4 if your car had 6.

^Ok, thats good to know. I will have to put my stock H back on this December when my inspection sticker goes out. I reinspected like 4 monthes early the day before I put my O/R X on so I could go another year LOL.The guys was like," err you know that your not due for like 4 months right?" so I am like, "Um yea I know its a little early I just want you guys to inspect it....you know so I dont have to be worrying about it and rushing to get it done or anything." Funny, think he knew what i was doing LOL.

when you go in for the smog check, tell them that you did an "engine replacement" to a 4v motor. if you say you did an "engine change" then you will get sent to the referee for sure. that is if you say anything, if you keep quiet they might not notice.

GAY thats all i have too say about this emmisions crap.. i used too do stickers in massachusetts when they went too the dyno system. (they forced all the techs too get the licence where i worked at the time) i passed everything.. even mustangs with no cats.. all i did was unplug the computer from the wall so it would'nt communicate with the state computer... then it would let me select what test too do... of course i would select safety only and print a sticker for it..

yeah i know it was illegal.. but i dont give a ****.. i hate emmisions laws.. there is only a small percentage of people that take the emmisions off.. and the effects on the enviorment by so few cars is next too nothing.. all emmisions laws do is punish the poor who cant afford new cars...

what do you tell a single mother tring too surviive working 2 jobs who cant afford too buy $1300 cat converters for her 1996 taurus... the car drives fine but it has a cat inefficency code so no sticker...

how is she going too buy a new car if she cant even afford 1300 for cats...

yeah they will allow you to get the sticker if a L1 certified tech puts 300 dollars of work into the car... but now thats 300 dollars less this poor person has too spend on somthing usful... like rent or food...

i am L1 certified ... and still have a license for stickers... but as far as i am concerned they can shove it up there ass... i will never do emmisions work.. i think it's stupid.. saftey yeah i think thats important... you cant drive around with loose ball joints ( you can injure others in a accident)

what bdcardinal is saying is exactly why I didn't do a Mach Swap. Too much hassle, I was lucky to have a 98 with returnless already, but I'm sure going to returnless couldnt cost that much if you are doing the work yourself. If you want reliable drop in a crate 2v with some stage I cams, and p&p'd heads. No one besides you would know the diffence, and it would be quick too.

we dont do stickers in CA. everything is electronic. the test results are sent straight to the state. they also have undercover cars. if you get caught passing a car the shouldnt, you lose your license and get a fine. also if you pass too many cars, the BAR have been known to park a spy van outside your work. when they see a car that shouldve failed pass, they have the CHP pull the car over and they have to go to a referee. if the referee fails the car, you lose your smog license.

as for feeling sorry for people, i guess i just dont. its not your right to own a car, its a privilege, if you cant afford it, thats not my fault.
