5.0 swap... front of motor to rad. measurements?

OK, something is not right in my 68. I have looked at virtually every post on the subject, but my setup seems to be unique. I have been trying to find an elec. fan that is thin enough to fit between the water pump and the radiator. I only have 3 3/4"s of clearance. One.. is that normal and two where do I get an electric fan that will fit? I have tried the Volvo fan 3 and 7/8th" thick, and the Taurus fan with the shroud cut down to 4" What should I have for clearance after the swap? Are the original 302's and 5.0's the same dimentions? If so what is going on... Any ideas?

There are two 5.0 front dress variations, I think; a short water pump and a long water pump. If you seem to have less clearance than usual, you might have a 5.0 with the long setup.

So, if I have the long version... I would have to switch out all the accessory brackets and water pump for alignment purposes?. Man, that would suck!

I just measured my radiator on my '68 and it looks like the dccontrol 33212 will fit if the side trim is left off of the fan. It's 2.8" thick at the water pump

Nice setup but I only have 2o 1/2" wide between the hose outlets. I just did some "metal" work (aka hammer and dolly) and now I have a full 3 1/2"s to work with. That leaves me with a 1/4" of space between the fan motor and the water pump Post. Would it be a bad thing to cut off the post on the water pump by about 3/8th" to gain even more clearance? I can't think of why I would need almost 1/2" nub sticking out. Anyone know of a good reason NOT to cut?

I machined down the bolt heads about 1/8" and then cut the stub off of the water pump about 1/4".

The only problem would be if you have a failure of the waterpump while a trip... you will have to cut that down in the field before you put it back on.... thats the only downfall I can think of.

Ifinally had a chance to measure mine. EFI 5.0 w/serpentine in a 65 2+2, and 2 row Northern aluminum radiator. I get 3 1/8 Rad to pump tip.

Are you running an elec. fan? if so, is it a Spal or Flex-a-lite? Those are the only ones I can find that are thin enough.

A stock 92 model 5.0 fan is whats on it right now,. Actually, what I'm looking for is a Volvo fan, my other car is an 850 wagon, so the idea appeals to me.

Why not run 2 smaller fans that are offset to each side? Then you'd have no prob with the water pump..

Good idea,
I have 21"s on the diagonal to work with and the only 10" fans i could find were big buck$ (if I wanted them to move enough air). Most only move 600-700 CFM. I was trying to get up in the 1600+ range. I just got onto the Flex-a-lite website and they have a decent low profile fan I'm sure will work. I was just trying to stay away from spending too much. Oh well, the stupid cooling fan will not be my car's weak point. We will call it an investment into air miles.

Thanks for your ideas. I went with the flex-a-lite low pro. I even have an extra 3/4" clearance, and the fan looks real nice.
