sacramento
Hello all.. finally got my 5 sp man. gt a week and half ago after waiting around 5 mos. I'll be coming up on 500 mi. soon and would like to do an oil change. It's very hot here in sacramento and the winters are mild, do you think it would be wise to maybe go with 10-30? Would there be warranty issues? 5-20 seems awful thin. What do you guys run? thx in advance.

I am running Mobile 1 5-20 on my first oil change. I would like to get Amsoil on my next change. I live in the Houston area and we have 100 degree summers and less then mild winters. I am going with what the manufacture recommends.

I went with mobil one 5w20 on my first change and plan to use that for every change. I would rather change the oil more often then use a heavier oil that is not recommended by the manufacturer.

Use the recommended 5w20. There have been many reports of VVT failures on F150s when the owners used heavier than the recommended viscosity oil.

Also, there really is no need to change your oil at 500 miles. This is 2005, not 1955, things have changed. Changing the oil before 2K miles is a waste.

If you really want to feel good and spend a lot of $, put in Mobil 1 0w20 or 5w20.

Greets-

I too must join the bandwagon suggesting the use of the recommended 5w-20. You want hot... come viist me in 117-degree Phoenix, Arizona! I asked the "5w-20 question" to a buddy of mine who's a mechanic, and asked if going to a higher weight might be worthwhile given the oppressive heat we get down here. He was of a mind that I should stick with the factory recommendation, if only because of the tighter tolerances these days on motors. He doesn't think I'm in any danger of overheating at all, either.

351CJ, for what its worth, my dealer even told me that I needen't change the oil unitl 3000 rolls up on the odometer... he also said I could beat the stuffing out of it and that varying my speed/revs alot would actually be good fopr it the first few times I have it out. Oh, well... I'm dangerously close to OT so I'll be quiet now :)

There is no harm in changing it early. Some will tell you its a waist of money, but it's not going to hurt anything. I changed mine at 750mi (all Motorcraft filter and oil, 5w-20) mostly because I wanted to change out the filter. My point is, if you want to change it at 500, go ahead and do it. To me it's worth the money for the peace of mind. And for what it is worth, there were some metal shavings in the filter when I cut it open. Enjoy the stang.
