Can the 5.4 short block be transplanted into our cars while keeping the 4.6 heads, intake and so on? It seems like it would be an easy and cheap way to gain some cubes. I know there doesn't seem to be an advantage in swapping in the whole motor at this point, as the 4.6 and F-150 5.4 make the same hp. So the 4.6 has been tuned to run, more so than the 5.4. However, if the 5.4 short block could be swapped in, that would give us more cubes and torque if nothing else.

The heads will swap, the intake will require a spacer. Personally I wouldn't do this swap. The 5.4 block is cast, the 4.6 block in the 05+ mustang is aluminum. You will be adding a fair bit of weight to the front with the 5.4. You will be losing high RPM HP as well, if you are staying N/A 3V.

I agree. The 5.4 is the exact same as the 4.6 except a little wider and a MUCH longer connecting rod, giving it the extra displacement. Without exotic internals (like the Ford GT), the RPM is really cut, like redline at 5000. You will gain lots of torque, but it would more then likely be slower due to the RPM capability and high RPM horsepower.

Redline at 5000?!?!

No.

My supercharged 5.4 will spin up to 5600 at shift... not redlining.. but at "MY" shift point.

granted.. you will add weight.. but not a LOT.

I'f you want more cubes.. there are kits available to increase the stroke on your 4.6 to 300CI. while retaining your stock heads.

Stroke it out to 300.. plus ported heads+ cams+ blower+ forged connecting rods and pistons and your golden to more HP tan you really want for a street car.

Supercharged cars are different than N/A cars. Even ported 3V heads do not flow enough air in N/A trim to support the issue of high RPM horsepower that a stroked or 5.4 motor have troubles making. Superchargers/Turbos overcome this as they add forced air. A SC'd or Turbo'd 5.4 should make power upto 6500 RPM easily.
