5-lug swap rear axle question(searched)

Today while i was at the JY i got a set or ranger axles both from a 97 ranger DS both the same length. But once i got them home i put them next to my mustang 4-lug axles and they are atleast 1/2" longer...can i not use 97 axles?? will the passanger side be 29-5/32 like i need??? I hope im not completly out...........

Unless you are looking to specifically have a stock track width, I think those axles should work. Many people use 94-95 mustang rear axles which are 0.75" longer than the stock axles and this works fine.

Edit: Looked up the axle length from: http://www.kabele.com/axleshaftsford.htm

Mustang - 29 5/32
97 Ranger DS - 30 1/8
97 Ranger PS - 27 1/4

Using longer axles can make tire fitment and rim choice a PITA. Stick with stock length.

it says mustang 8.8 axles are 29 1/4 and ranger's are 29 1/8 i guess the difference in length doesnt hurt??? i just bought a set of mustang length 5 lug from ebay.

Stick with the Mustang axles you just bought.

I run 96 gt axles with no issues. I have 255-45-17's in the rear with sportlines. No rubbing

Hang on here? I assume he wants to run the stock-lenght axles so he can just run 5-lug drums in the rear.

In that case none of the SN95 axles can be used.

You are using incorrect ranger axles however. These are the years you want

'83-'92 Ranger/Bronco II Left (driver) side axle (29-5/32") from a 4cyl or 3.0L V-6 with the 7.5" rear end
'86-'97 Aerostar RIGHT side axles (29-5/32")

Comes with New 5 lug drums and axles.

Junkyards will want about $50-75 per axle anyway and they will have 100K on them.

well i bought a set of ranger axles on ebay already so i can still run the 9" drums but have 5-lug.....

junkyard around here usually wants $20 per axle ...you pull them but most of them are bent

I agree, they wanted $75 for each by me... I got mine (used but the exact ones I needed) for $90 online on ebay. Stock length and ready to run my disc set up!

I was just giving him an extra option. 95+ are longer but widen out the track that looks great IMO

X2, I like the Extra width of the SN95 Rear, it does look great!

Depends on the wheels you want to run. The extra width works with some wheels not with others. Id rather have a narrow width and run a spacer then limit my wheel choices with a wider track!

It's easy to get extra width with spacers, but you can never get less if you go wider. No way in hell i could run 275 18 inch drag radials with a 95+ width.

I would say it depends on the Offset of your Wheels.

Luke runs 275/40/17s on his Coupe with SN95 Axles and no Problems! His Quads and Tailpipes are still in place too!

18 inch bfg drag radials, run extremely wide, much wider than a standard tire.
