Given that it's 12 years old and has likely had a hard life that trans probably has synchronizers in need of replacement.

However, you may also want to check the clutch adjustment. If the clutch isn't releasing fully it may result in it being difficult to select gears.

The guy I bought it from put a stiffer clutch in it so that may be the problem... how do you adjust them and how do you kno if its set right?

If the car has the factory quadrant (the part the cable wraps around under the dash) it should be self-adjusting. It can be forced by using the toe of your foot and pulling up on the clutch pedal.

If the car has an "adjustable quadrant" with an adjuster on the firewall then adjust it so there's perhaps 1/2-in or so of play in the pedal.

I'm pretty sure its adjustable. So you want a half inch of play in the bedal when adjusting?

Give or take. Start with 1/2". If there's no further resistance to going into gear and there's no clutch slippage, you've got it.

If there's still some resistance, remove a little bit of slack. Don't adjust it 'til there's no slack though...

If there's even a hint of slippage, add more back.

If you run out of adjustment and the trans still balks at shifting you may have other issues.

Let's start with a simple question, would you feel comfortable removing the transmission from your car?

How much do you have to take apart?

Pretty much to the bare shafts. The synchronizers are mounted on the mainshaft adjacent to each gear. For instance (not a 3650 but same idea):

Getting at the components involves pulling the gears off the shaft. It's about as complete a disassembly as you'll find.

It's not "hard", really, but it does take some special tools and I wouldn't tackle it without at least a shop manual...
