I have decided to run a TrickFlow stage 1 cam with my AFR 165cc heads, how close is safe when it comes to coil bind on the valve springs. I am running 1.7RR's and the lift should be in the rang of .529 intake and .540 exhaust, is this safe to run with the exhaust lift just .010 away from bind? I could step down to 1.6RR's but I have already bought the 1.7RR's.

You'll be fine. I think the springs actually have coil bind at around 1.10", which with a 1.80" installed height is a .700" lift. The .550" is just a recommendation on how high. I have my AFR papers, I can look it up.

SO I could run a bigger cam, that is just the recomended limit? That would be awesome, .550 is to limiting to an extreme cam. If you could look it up that would be great! Thanks!

what cam are you THINKING of running? i would definately upgrade your springs to a .600 lift for the $100 or so that they are. its better now, than changing them later down the road.

Thats the thing, I don't know what to run now, I was under the assumption that I had to run under .550, But your right I should change the springs to, any off the shelf cam recomendations? I am not trying for a custom cam, seems like alot of money.

OK, since you mentioned the Comp Cams, i used the Xe274 and had good results. that is a .555/.565 lift cam, so your springs are going to take a pounding.
Custom cams are very, very nice. yes, you will spending $100-150 more on one Vs. a Comp Cams camshaft, but its built for YOUR car.

as for springs, i would get some COmp Cams double or tripple coil that can handle an agressive cam and .600 lift.
